I could have sworn we had a topic for The Mist up. But I cannot find it.

I watched it. It doesn't look bad. It doesn't look awesome. It looks competent tho. And it's got some good actors.

It's been too long since I read the story, but I don't remember the religious angle.

it looks great. i love andre braugher. the religious angle is from the book. (mrs. carmody i want to say?)

That story freaked the **** out of me, and due to all the internal dialog could never be done justice on screen.

That was a great story. In fact, Skeleton Crew is probably one of my favourite short-story collections. The Raft, The Mist, that one about the guy sniping in college...(A theme King liked...Rage...Apt Pupil...)

i was joking. i would love to be in the meeting with the studio execs tried to paint a happy ending on that story though.

This movie was no romp. The Mist is a hard, dark, apocalyptic tale of ordinary people forced to face creatures without & within and everyone will pay a price to survive. [link]

Missed the Mist at the theater but watched the film over the weekend. I did not previously read the King short story.
The film certainly has that King creepiness to it, especially once things get going. The special effects kind of fail when viewed within the buildings but the exterior shots are pretty good. If you already know the story then you understand what I mean when I say I couldn't wait for a certain character to meet their end. I honestly couldn't take another second of it. I was poised to walk out of the room but then was saved from total annoyance. All in all the film was memorable and the exploration of human behavior under extreme conditions was interesting. Oh and I've often toyed with the concept of writing a story with a terrible UN happy ending. After watching the Mist I've decided against it.

It's one of my favorite films. Especially because of the sad ending. If everyone walked away all happy-go-lucky, it would've killed the rest of the film.

the changed ending works better than the book ending. imho.

If there is a group on the net that saw the irony in the ending, it had to be Donaldson readers, but this is why I hated the ending.

The people who joined Mrs. Carmoddy gave their will to live to her. They gave in to their fear.

The smaller group held onto hope, but in the end, they caved.

Despair won. Maybe they were doomed to fail after what they went through,

but I'll always hate that kind of ending.

It's a great ending, even with that caveat (which I agree with).

The frustrating thing is that at the beginning it shows Tom Jane painting away in his studio with a facsimile of the movie poster for The Thing in the background. The Thing, even though it came out 26 years ago, still has some of the best creature effects ever put to film. It's a shame that the director didn't use Carpenter as his muse.

Actually, come to think of it, the whole film, especially the ending, has a Carpenter feel to it.

I didn't notice it but you're very right. It's got a very creepy aura throughout, very in line with Carpenter.

I just saw this movie and Wow! This is the best horror flick I have seen in many years. It has some very agonizing psychological 'what-would-I-do' terror scenes. I rarely pace the floor while watching a movie, but this one had me pace a couple times. I agree about the Carpenter feel; also reminded me of H.P. Lovecraft.

i believe that King created the beasties as an homage to Lovecraft.
