To those whose submissions were not chosen on this occasion, I will say that once again I am faced with what I find the least enjoyable aspect of being a part of the KW Anthologies - announcing that while some works were selected others were not. If you have any questions about the selection process or what we thought about your submitted work please send me a private message and we can have a chat.

Congrats indeed. Thank you everyone very much for contributing to the Anthologies and making this effort so rewarding and fun for us all. I encourage those that weren't selected to keep writing. I'm not aware of any of the submissions being thought of negatively so it had to be a very hard decision for the committee. I thank Variol, Murrin and dANdeLION for their commitment.

Dragonlilly is truly remarkable for contributing her time and expertise. She deserves a gold medal or a trophy for service above and beyond the call.

Can we get these on e-book? Does dragonlily have an option for that?

I think Lulu offers that option along with the print publishing.

Some of the authors might want to bear in mind that a professional e-publisher would contract for exclusive e-publishing rights. That would require removing the to-be-contracted story from any Lulu-published e-book.

So what you're saying is that if we ask Lulu to do an e-book version, and then we tried to shop our story to a regular publisher, we would not be able to sell them e-publishing rights. Is that right?

Aliantha, if you contract the electronic rights to one of the Anthology stories, the publisher would require that the story be removed from the electronic (e-book) version of the Anthology.

We did that with one author who was selling her book as an ebook off her own website until she signed our contract.

Publishing contracts require some kind of exclusivity. Some will require that no version of any kind can be published anywhere else for the duration of the contract, in any way. Others will specify: we are going to publish this as an English e-book, and what you do with it in print or audio or in another language is your own business. Just don't duplicate what we are doing.

Foul, if you decide to go to grad school where I am, you'll see that I'm really not purple.

Okay, so let's look at the other side of the equation (before I get myself into trouble...). Dunno if you even know the answer to this.

If I were to send out to a hard-copy publisher a story I wrote for one of our anthologies, and by some miracle (trumpets, celestial light, angel wings, etc.) somebody bought the thing -- would the fact that it's been published already scotch the deal? IOW, does self-publication count toward, y'know, "first North American serial rights"? Should I mention in my cover letter that the story was published in a KW anthology? Is it okay to not bring it up at all?

I know that Eragon was self published before being picked up by Random House. So there must be ways around that.

If you say it was "selected for a short story anthology self-published by your internet group," that's probably the best spin for it. You went through a selection process. Specify that you own all the rights. They would almost certainly want the story removed from future printouts of the book -- which, with Lulu, is perfectly doable.

Beyond that I don't know. It depends on the publisher. You don't want to spring it on them late.
