i don't suppose it ever occurred to you that we might just want to wonder?
or we might just want to look it up in the GI ourselves?

I'm sorry. Sheesh. I'll never ever ever ask him anything about any of his books ever ever again in email. I swear it. Never ever. I am gonna go hide in my closet now.
Now if I could just find a way to wear live bees as jewelry all the time.....
Swarthy means dusky complexion but I've never heard it used for blacks in America. In German and Yiddish I've heard the term schwartze used for African descent. In the literature I almost always assume the author uses the word swarthy to describe character instead of skin tone.
"...and if you do not listen, then to hell with you."
I'd use swarthy to describe middle eastern or mediterranean complexions. Since he comes right out and tells us the Ubikwe is black, I see no reason to have a code for Angus. Also, other descriptions of his face turning black with rage/whatever wouldn't make much sense if he was.
As for Mallorys, somewhere, somewhen, dAN explained why there was no apostrophe. Can't remember his explanation though.
hmm... i believe itw as srd's concession to the way we're butchering the english language, and that eventually the apostrophe would go the way of the dodo because people would forget how to use it, and so eventually it would just disappear.
though nowaday's it seems people put in too many apostrophe's instead of too few, stupidly thinking that plurality is indicated by an apostrophe.
I've only read The Real Story once before and that was a long time ago...say 9 years ago? anyway, the book touched me so much, that i refused to read any more of the books. it was too emotional for me at that time in my life. i remember finishing the book and i found myself looking at people at the store or wherever, asking myself, "who would be Angus?"
I am really glad to be reading this now and to be a part of the discussion.
this first chapter is one of the best openings to a book that i have ever read. i was intrigued right away.
My first post in a Gap forum! But all I wish to add is this: it is an intriguing beginning to a tale, this first chapter. Very inviting to the reader to continue onward.
wow! I had forgotten ENTIRELY that I did the close reading of the first chapter!! and...wow...I did a pretty good JOB of it TOO!! lol!!
so i'm listening to this series on audible after not having read it for many years, mostly because Jay mentioned what he felt was a gaping plot hole regarding the Calm Horizons pursuit. I've forgotten much of the story so it's almost like reading it again for the first time! yay!
MY first NEW question is...i'm not clear on how someone "gives themself" a zone implant. i'm only a little ways in but I noticed that in the description of what a zone implant is, the narrator says something about crews giving themselves zone implants to safeguard against gap sickness. and I was all like...they give it to them their selves??? huh?
so yeah...that's my first new question. i will be asking more, i'm sure!
