I just read the chapter "Sons." Donaldson at his best, IMNSHO. Reminded me of the chapter in A Man Rides Through when Eremis & Co. translated into Orison: nonstop action and a piling-on of forces and foes.

I about crapped my pants when six (!) sandgorgons arrived. Badass to the extreme.

OK, back to reading.....

"Nom! We need you!"

When Linden screamed that I got up out of my chair and started jumping around! (Uh... how old am I again...? ) I was almost close to tears because I was sooo hoping that would happen in this book.

But like you said Aranion: SIX of them! Wooo!

Oh yes, that chapter is the very definition of "kick ass".

Yeah, I screamed like a little girl at that point too.

Agreed. The skurj are more nightmarish and very monstrous; the Sandgorgons are albino whirlwinds of power and mystery. Sandgorgons rock!

Wouldn't he kill them all? ;)

Let's think this through, folks. If Nom were elected, we'd then have a shred of a Raver inhabiting the White House!

...wait...

(Apologies to any Dubya fans here. It was just too good a chance to pass up.)

Why is this chapter entitled "Sons?"

There are a couple of obvious reasons - Roger shows up, and we have Anele still hanging around, and Esmer makes another appearance. But we already knew about them.

The interesting piece of information that came out of the previous chapter is when Stave talked about how he had to face the disapproval of his sons along with the rest of the Masters. So when this chapter began, I thought we were going to learn more about Stave's sons, and the most obvious conclusion since the Humbled were now accompanying Linden was that one or more of the Humbled were sons of Stave. However, SRD didn't reveal that to us, at least not at this time.

Yeah, it's almost like the book titles: we still don't really know what the runes of the Earth are, and this book has enough fatal revenants that any one of 'em could be the title character. I think you're spot-on, tho, that Stave's sons are one or more of the Humbled.

Doesn't SRD have a penchant for using words in antiquated senses?

Rune comes from the Proto-Norse runa, meaning "secret."

So, with Anele's ability to read stones, he could be reading the runes of the earth.

Compound this with Rune Stones, which are menhirs used as burial markers, if I'm not mistaken.
