Anyone seen this? I'm wondering whether it's worth downloading.

I've yet to see the film, but Le Guin's response to it is interesting:

I for one agree with Le Guin that the film's solution--actively destroying evil with violence--is antithetical to the message of her books.

The fact that it wasn't directed by Hayao Miyazaki was detrimental to the production. His son should have listened to his father's advice, rather than tackling such a massive project. It's a finely-crafted film, I'm sure, but I doubt it's anywhere near such Ghibli classics as Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away.

Not worth it if you're a fan of the books. Come to the Hangar and find out in the Immanent Grove forum. ;)

Thanks LF, very interesting read.

Av: yes, very much a fan of the books. I'll have to pay the Hangar a visit, then. :)

Please do, Edge and anyone else. We would love you to come comment on the Group Read of AWoE, or possibly even take on a chapter to dissect in the Archives of Roke forum.

If taken entirely on its own merits, it's a passable anime film. If taken as a version of Earthsea, it starts reasonably well but deteriorates as time goes on, until the names are all that's recognisable.
