One has to wonder how director Joe Carnahan feels about being snubbed twice by J.J Abrams. First, he had the directing gig set for MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III only to lose the gig, something Abrams eventually was awarded from Paramount. Now, he has his lost the lead actor attached to his upcoming WHITE JAZZ film and why did he lose him? Because Chris Pine has opted out of the project and selected J.J Abrams' STAR TREK film instead, a project set to film at the same time as Carnahan's film. Joe has updated his blog letting the media know that Pine will indeed be suiting up as Captain Kirk in the next installment.
With this casting announcement, the cast is almost entirely set for JJ Abrams and producers Bryan Burk and Lindelof. Here's the official cast for the next film:
Chris Pine-Young Kirk
Zachary Quinto-Young Spock
Leonard Nimoy- Old Spock
Eric Bana-Nero
Simon Pegg-Young Scotty
Anton Yelchin-Young Chekov
Zoe Saldana-Young Uhura
John Cho-Young Sulu
Note to our readers: The rumor is still going strong on sites such as Trekmovie that Karl Urban will be playing "Young Bones" but this has yet to be confirmed by JJ Abrams, Paramount or any press release from Variety or Hollywood Reporter. Until it is confirmed, we have 3 major characters involved that need to be cast. Bones and Kirk's parents which will be involved in the film according to studio sources. Prduction will begin in November and last through March of 2008.
STAR TREK hits theaters Christmas Day 2008.
I don't know Chris Pine from a hole in the ground so I have to reserve judgment until I find out more.

Kirk never looked so good.
Between him and Sylar/Spock there is pretty much no way I won't be enjoying this movie.

I hope he's a bad enough actor to play Kirk.

There was no need to insult him just because his opinion differed from your own, Waddley.

Are you a Star Trek fan at all? This movie is going to sssssuuuuck.
This movie is what we call, "Beating a Dead Horse."
"Trying to squeeze blood out of a stone."
"Pumping a dry well."
All odd-numbered trek movies suck.
They always half.
Star Trek 1: The Motion Sickness.
Star Trek 3: The Search for More Mone- Er, I mean Spock.
Star Trek 5: The Film That Made No Sense and Violated Canon
Star Trek 7: The Old People Are Retiring and Need Money
Star Trek 9: The Movie We've Already Done In Episodes
Star Trek 11: The Movie That Millions of Fans will Shell Out Cash to See Even Though It's Going to Suck.
About the Emo comment.
I'm not even angry.
I'm being so since right now.
Even though you broke my heart and killed me.
And tore me to pieces.
And threw every piece into a fire.

Hah. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Hold on.
Gimme a minute.

Okay. *hiccough, the scourge of man*
I love you, too, Cail.
You've slept with every one of our wives -- and we respect you for it.

a beautiful line
And we’re out of beta, we’re
releasing on time
So I’m glad I got burned
think of all the things we
learned
for the people who are
still alive!

Confirmed Karl Urban is Dr. McCoy.
I think that is the last of them. The cast seems set. Now all they have to do is the exact opposite of what E.L. seems to think the film will be like. Or not.

I can see Urban delivering a good He's dead, Jim. The others -- who knows. I think Quinto might be unfortunate as Spock due to everyone will see him and go "Look, it's Sylar!".

HA! Thats the only line they'll let him utter, except for
"Dammit Jim, I'm a
doctor not a [name your profession here]."

Damn. I was hoping it would be Paul McGillion from SGA... Then I'd have a little more incentive to see this thing. Well, I guess they could do worse than Karl Urban.
[Edit: I just remembered - McGillion was reading for Scotty, not McCoy. Either way, he's out. *grumble*]

When speaking of eye candy, let us not forget who's playing Uhura:
