A VERY fragile Arch of Time...

Covenant is presumably STILL the Arch of Time. Even though he has now been reborn in flesh.

Does that mean that if he is killed, the Arch breaks? Has the Arch now been made as fragile as Covenant's mortal flesh? :?:

I don't think Covenant is part of the AoT any longer. IMO that's what he meant when he said "Linden, what have you done?"

But suppose he is? What if he meant ''what have you done, all they have to do now is kill me to break the Arch?" ;)

It would certainly make the suspense of keeping him alive much more keen in the remaining two books... :)

Covenant's revival has removed him as Timewarden. If he dies again he can resume his previous occupation.

No, Infelice still refers to him as the Timewarden right after he is made corporeal. He is still the Timewarden, just made flesh.

Or perhaps its just a title now. Covenant had to die to preserve the Arch, what good is he to the Arch alive?

He may have aquired "lore" to use the Arch as a source of power. problem may be that if he can remember it.

I just posted something like this in the other thread.

Linden may have done something to Law when she resurrected Covenant. Something which changes the whole picture. She may have created a new Law, different from the old Laws, that somehow creates a new barrier between the living and the Dead.

Caer Caveral did a lot of work to ensure that TC could be effective when dead. Now Linden has brought him back to life. If she has somehow shut the door so that TC, if dead, would be effectless, or even nothing, she could have precipitated a disaster.

At best, she made it possible for the Timewarden to be destroyed. At worst, she made the Arch itself "mortal".

One of the hints I see that fits this theory is the repeated admonition that Linden screwed things up by creating the Staff. Even if this is wrong, it hints that more Law may not always be good Law.

I would more say that Linden rearranged the nature of the Arch. I mean, if TC is the Timewarden, the protector of the Arch, the very essence of white gold, and he has been reincarnated, then it seems that it's the Arch that's different. I see Law having been imposed on the Arch in a way that it never was before (if it ever was before) Linden's reckless action.

Slightly off subject

Hello, new here to the site. I've enjoyed the different takes on FR greatly - thanks for all the interesting points of view.

I was thinking that the people of the Land should write a letter to the Elohim given the latter's "political stance" concerning the Earth and the all the beings who inhabit it.

I could see it now:

Dear Elohim,

We the people of the land would like to formally address you concerning your position with regards to the fate of the Earth.

It has come to our attention that over the last several thousand years, you've stood by and watched (or not even bothered to watch) as we've struggled and died at the hands of Lord Foul, also known as A-Jeroth of the Seven Hells, Render, Corruption, etc.

We think you should know how we feel about this position. It is our notion that if you'd like to play "Wonder Twins" and scream "form of a waterfall!" while watching Lord Foul...
1. Convince one of our own boys to nuke the entire Land when YOU had the knowledge to prevent this.
1. Subsequently slaughter our families with montrous beings mutated by a stone which YOU could destroy.
2. Decimating our land so that we can't go outside without potentially becoming some Evil mutated lizard man.
3. Randomly selecting us for blood sacrifice to further empower said land decimation, all the while tricking us into believing this is actually a cure, (and all the while YOU could have "teleported" over here and showed us the truth).

...then we'd like to say a big "F You" in regards to the latest crises, in which one of OUR heroes has apparently put YOUR EXISTENCE into jeopardy. While we ourselves are quite concerned regarding the latest developments, we do take some smug satisfaction in knowing that if we go down, SO DO YOU.

So, you think you should have been a little more involved now, oh "all knowing heart of the earths"?

We would like to think that with your now obviously given assistance in regards to the circumstances, that all will be well in the end, but either way, take this as a lesson:

The next time some crises comes about regarding the Land, you may want to give us a helping hand....that is of course, if there is any Land, or us, or YOU, left after the current mess has ended.

Sincerely,

The Various Peoples, Animals, Beings, and Trees of the Land.

As told to: The Theomach.

Looks like the Theomach needs to proofread his work. Apparently, that isn't knowledge he's obtained yet, along with proper number ordering.

That should be:

1. Convince one of our own boys to nuke the entire Land when YOU had the knowledge to prevent this.
2. Subsequently slaughter our families with montrous beings mutated by a stone which YOU could destroy.
3. Decimating our land so that we can't go outside without potentially becoming some Evil mutated lizard man.
4. Randomly selecting us for blood sacrifice to further empower said land decimation, all the while tricking us into believing this is actually a cure, (and all the while YOU could have "teleported" over here and showed us the truth).

One of the hints I see that fits this theory is the repeated admonition that Linden screwed things up by creating the Staff. Even if this is wrong, it hints that more Law may not always be good Law.
Wayfriend.. who said the Staff is bad?? Roger did when he was plating the TC lookalike. Roger also said the Sunbane would have died down since the Banefire was put out. All those thing were wrong. They were said to mislead.

But if she was a danger the Arch, I would think both the Elohim and the Harrow would have said something to the effect. Both want to preserve the Arch. To created a new Law to that effect would have made both of them more reactive and prevent her from resurrecting TC.
Yet they seem both willing to accept what Linden did. Even if it means all the Elohims are going to be worm food. (Well the Harrow would want that).
If she did something else, it may that the Insequents would have perished.

It will be a long wait indeed.

Infelice said that although the Staff was a "benison" in many ways, it weakened the Timewarden. I think she indicated that it wasn't necessary, or something like that.

Correct. Infelice said it, as well as Roger, and Roger may have been using something he knew rather than making something up.

Why put that into the story if not for a reason?

And it is true that Laws can prevent things from happening. That's sort of what they are for. However, it should be viewed as preventing the bad guys from wreaking havoc on the world, or as preventing the world from going to pieces. So why this emphasis on how it prevents the good guys from doing what is needed to be done?

Maybe we need to learn more about Law. Maybe it is not as great as it sounds. I doubt it, but it's possible.

I'm not sure how far we can rely on Infelice's word. We now know the Elohim can lie through their teeth (see: Findail and the One Tree's Guardian). More convincing to me is the fact that TC himself had no problem whatsoever with Linden making the new Staff when he spoke to her during her return to the real world. Far from telling her she had screwed up, he praised her efforts. That said, I think there any still be an issue of some sort with the Staff. Caerroil Wildwood spoke of a blackness in it which he did not comprehend.

Yeah, what that guy said.

Good points all but something to think about: How the hell can you write TWO more books if the Worm is awake? The way Findal talked made it sound as if everything would come to an end as soon as the Worm was awakened. "it will shed this skin of rock and dirt and continue it's journey" is how I think it was stated

Perhaps our understanding of the Worm and how it works is inadequate at this point. That or the Worm is merely in a "pre-awakening" phase... getting kind of restless. Sort of like when TC grasped a branch of the One Tree.

Several things come to mind.

(1) the Worm could be tranquilized, by Linden say. Or, heck, by Longwrath ... who knows. That's what I expect.

(2) Linden grabs everyone, creates a ceasure, and takes them all back in time to the Lands distant past. And the rest of the series is working out how to do number (1). That's what I fear.

(3) Or... through the logical extension of everything that has happened so far ... Someone named Dai Ussex, of the race of The High Cruft, pops in, tells Linden she will destroy the Earth, gets into a fight with Esmer, the Harrow, Infelice, and a Raver all at once, only to be broken up by Anele, who has become possessed by a sandgorgon, and, as he (Dai) falls to the ground in death, sings a song that causes the Viles to come, who involve the Worm in a endless debate about Whos on First, which prevents the Worm from getting up off its couch and doing something today.
