Has anyone else seen this thing? It is a bit too long, but Petty finally gets his due as one of the greats. His rise is marked by luck, self-interest, and outright refusal to f'd with. great stuff!

Excellent as Rockumentary's go. Amazing that they had to go to Europe to hit, and then return to the states famous.

It was an odd path. I also think that Petty was wise to fight his record company tooth and nail. It not only gave him great PR, but street cred too.

He turned down Stevie Nicks, she didnt even want equal billing, just wanted to be a Heartbreaker, instead their collaboration produced two of the most memorable duets in Rock history. The man is underappreciated, even if he does tend to write, and sound like Dylan.

There is a Dylanesque quality there, but I'd argue he's got a little Roger McGuin in there as well as a little Bo Diddley.

There is nothing wrong with open acknowledgement of your influences, they are as crucial a component to a musicians indentity, as upbringing. My band covers 2 Petty songs, so I would have to include him as one of mine.
