I don't have showtime so I'm stuck avoiding season 4 like the plague until I can hack it- I mean buy the DVDS!

Finally caught up with season 4. Phenomenal! John Lithgow was an inspired choice for a quest star this season, and there was a great surprise mid season. How in the hell is it that a deranged serial murderer is the most endearing and emotionally engaging character on television? This is one of those rare shows that I think I can recommend to almost anyone. There is something to like no matter what your tastes are.

i've had this come up for me before when i was reading lawrence block's keller series (hit man) and andrew vachss' burke novels (burke kills child molesters for a living)

it kinda bugs me that i'm willing to accept that killing someone is the way to make them pay for their crimes. (i'm against the death penalty but i like dexter?)
this makes no sense to me.

i know its just fiction but...still. i have to think about it more.

what can i say? I love the Show... I just hope they dont feel the need to ruin it by getting Dexter Killed or caught.... I really hope they figure out how to make this series end with Dex living happily ever after. Ive never minded someone who takes out the infectious garbage. Dexter was a lead in the show 6 feet Under... same narrative from him too... Loved that show too but man the montage ending really Screwed me up.

BTW... Dexter and his sister (on the show) are married in real life.

DEXTER = gum to fill the holes in the legal system where murderers are concerned.

It might be because Dexter is so competent and is neurotic enough to follow his code to an extreme level of rigidity. He is so compulsive he doesn't make mistakes. It's because he is so damn good at what he does that we can forgive him. We can even admire him for how uncompromising he is to his code, how many of us can say the same?

The question of his emotional health is more interesting. Is he *really* missing something? Or is he just aware of the fact that he has to fake it, while the rest of us are just faking it without realizing?

I'd also like to stress that only the best fiction can challenge you WHILE it engages you. You feel disturbed because the show is calling into question things you took for granted. That's art changing you! And it's a wonderful thing.

I think it more a matter than Dexter in an inherently fascinating character, as a result of both writing and acting. What grabs my attention so much is his odd self-contemplation coupled with a surprising lack of self-knowledge. He is baffled, for example, by his own efforts to save his marriage as well as the genuine feelings he has for his sister (Dexter, not Michael C. Hall).

It isn't just that he goes around killing murderers. Were it just that there're dozens of very bad movies that should be blockbusters. 'Tis much more.

Yeah, it actually hurt quite a bit. I was about as queasy as Dex was about the whole thing.

Season 4 is getting... complicated. The whole season seems to be about juggling responsibilities. Dex has a WHOLE lot of stuff in the air right now, it's going to be extremely interesting to see how it all hits the ground (as it must) There are so many different avenues for disaster open this season, my hunch is it isn't going to come from anywhere we expect.

Holy tap-dancing Christ. Anyone else catch the season 4 finale? I haven't shit so large a brick since the S3 finale of Battlestar Galactica. I thought this season seemed to be ending a bit too sweetly and tightly. My guess

was completely wrong. They actually surprised the hell out of me. Maybe it was cheap, but damn was it a sock in the gut.

quinn, i think, is going to be a problem down the road for dex.

I knew there was a shock coming, but I figured it would be someone Dexter knew catching him disposing of Trinity or something... I did NOT expect that.

I cant believe they did that.. unless its a dream i see no other course but a black downward spiral for Dexter. good twist but but overall it made me want to twist off the writers .......well.... I just hope its a dream for Dexters sake

Same here. But I doubt the writers of this show would do something like that.

Never noticed this thread before. Major Dexter fan here. We got addicted from episode 1 season 1 and were able to watch the first three seasons all at once - well, a week or so I think it took, but it was all back to back.

This last season has felt very different. Not sure if it's because we're watching an episode per week, instead of one long Dexter binge. But it felt awkward.

The first three seasons were just so good about subplot development - things that seemed a bit flippant at the moment, turned out to be problems that just wouldn't go away. Consequences to every decision popped up later to remind you they hadn't gone away.

But this last season feels a bit more self contained. Trinity was a great addition, a neat reflection for Dexter. But Rita annoyed the hell out of me. I kept wanting to stand up for Dexter and yell at the TV - let him be a man for crying out loud!!

Anyway, the ending totally caught me by surprise and I still really don't like it. I'm drawing a blank as to how this show will look next season.

heh. i liked it. i couldn't stand her. but i totally didn't see it coming, tho i think there were plenty of clues it was.
