Super-Krill

Super-Krill

How and when did Linden learn about the ability of the Krill to be a super-duper power conductor with an extra-special safety-feature?

It had some role in Hollian's resurrection no doubt, but I don't know what, as all of that Hollian/Sunder/Caer Caveral/Krill/Law-of-Life business was, to me, inexplicably bizarre.

And the krill was burnt out, finished, was it not?

I like the krill, I'm glad it's back.
And I very much enjoyed Linden's quest for it.
As I haven't read 2C for a decade or two, can any of you well-informed folks tell me if I've missed/forgotten something?

I think TC told her that it could handle any power that was put into it.
How he knew for sure is never said exactly.

Thank you HLT.
I read the chronicles as an adolescent, and now, about two decades later, I just don't read fiction. Reading Runes and Revenant has (obviously!) been an exception. They grabbed my attention simply because they are a continuation of those extraordinary books I read back then.

The krill has always been my favorite piece of power in the entire series. Covenent raising it from Glimmemere after four thousand years remains my favorite moment in all the books combiined.

It was especially goosebumpy after Gibbon showed TC the truth of what happened to the Land after his defeat of Foul. God i needed hope myself and that scene provided it.

Yes it was, but what was true in WGW isn't necessarily true anymore.

I don't remember the Krill being "burnt out"; I just remember it saying that it was "stabbed into the trunk without any possibility of removal", or something along those lines. Of course, at the end of PTP, Mhoram throws the Krill into Glimmermere and the text says that it flashed once and then was "gone forever", and obviously that didn't turn out to be true.

"Burnt out" may be too strong a phrase - but the light of the krill was definitely out.

Is it ever said just what kind of stone the krill is made with? Is it orcrest?

I feel like a burn out not being able to think of this. :fim:

perhaps the gem of the krill is a piece of "The One Stone" much like the SoL was a limb of the One Tree...would love to see what Anele has to say if he touches it

The text never states explicitely that the Krill is finished, but rather that its light has gone out and that its stabbed deep into the tree trunk. Well, the light of the gem has gone out before, and a tree trunk should not be an impossible obstacle.

Doesn't it say in WGW that the krill is in the trunk "without possibility of removal?" (paraphrasing from memory.)

I think it does, but remember that the text said more or less the same when it was thrown into Glimmermere.

Maybe so, but the difference is SRD intended for TPTP to be the end of the story, but he never had that intent with WGW.

I read Runes. Read the first chronicles while I wanted for Fatal Revenant. There was nothing in the first that I read, though I do skip words when i re-read, finding others I missed the first time, that the krill can handle any conceivable amount of power.
I think this is a development.
I have just finished The Wounded Land, by the way, and I was looking for something along those lines while reading it, in references to the krill.
Not there.
It is a development in the nature of the story.
Like the knowledge Covenant has of the land in his waynyhim-blood run, of Andelian scion, lake peluce, etc.
it always seemed to me that was knowledge gained from the Wanyhim, but reading it more closely, Covenant thought he was remembering the names from his prior visits to the Land. It isn't made clear.
I love the krill as well. The raising of it from Glimmermere is an awesome moment in the series, and I don't know about y'all, but I love the Darrel Sweet paperback covers. It's just how I imagine them.

Mhoram thinks, as he draws the krill just after he feels the thing re-ignite "charged to overflowing with echoes of wild magic", and just before he stabs Satansfist with it, that "it was a weapon strong enough to bear any might." So that thing was there from the beginning.

How the insight got to Linden is somewhat less sure. Possibly Covenant is feeding her stuff subconsciously in dreams.

Possibly Foul is whispering in her ear.

Re: How the insight got to Linden is somewhat less sure.

I think she may remember TC using the Krill to channel wild magic in the Sarangrave-- he even used the Seven (well Six) Words. In fact he specifically said something along the lines that he needed a weapon to focus on in order not to explode with power.

In The Power That Preserves was wrote:But now Mhoram felt the fire which burned against his flesh under his robe. In a rush of exaltation, he understood it, grasped its meaning intuitively. As the Stone reached its height over his head, he tore open his robe and grasped Loric's krill.

Its gem blazed like a hot white brazier in his hands. It was charged to overflowing with echoes of wild magic; he could feel its keenness as he gripped its hilt.

It was a weapon strong enough to bear any might.
So ... it was known since Mhoram's time.

Yes, but it's a very weak reference.
At the time it was said about the Krill Mhoram was actually restricted with how much power he could channel through his staff.
The staffs at the time weren't made to handle the power he was tossing around at the end of PtP.
The Krill on the other hand, created by an Old Lord, could handle it easily.

Perhaps the Theomach had something to do with it's creation. Maybe he had knowledge of the white gold. Maybe it is made of cooled Earthblood form skyweir. With time travel now in the cards cause and effect are messed up.

Possible. But the Theomach was probably long gone from the land by the time Loric came around.
