From Yahoo: Did any of you fellas give such a gift to yer gal? Did any gals get such crap? Do tell!

We asked Yahoo! Personals users what they should avoid giving to girlfriends or boyfriends. Here's what they told us.

Gift to avoid #1: Unless you are planning on proposing, avoid gifting jewelry, especially a ring, as that perceived level of commitment may intimidate your sweetheart.

Gift to avoid #2: While a ring may be considered overboard, anything impersonal, such as a kitchen appliance or gift card can be construed as thoughtless or insincere.

Gift to avoid #3: Avoid gifting lingerie for your first holidays together. It may be considered too intimate and send the wrong message.

Gift to avoid #4: Gifting something selfish, such as sporting event tickets when you know your significant other isn't a sports fan, can relay that you may be more focused on your own interests than that of the person you are getting the gift for.

Lump-of-coal award winner: The boyfriend who bought his girlfriend a Wii. Turns out that she wasn't a gamer, he just needed a place to put the Wii because he already had an Xbox and Playstation 3 at his house.

Gift to avoid #5:
Work-related items that promote efficiency at the office should generally be avoided. Why bring up "work" during the holidays, which is a time for relaxation.

Gift to avoid #6: Clothing may be offensive, especially if you aren't sure about what size to purchase.

Gift to avoid #7: Animals as presents are generally bad ideas unless you know the person very well. Pets are huge commitments and way too serious for a "first holiday" together.

Lump-of-coal award winner: The boyfriend who gave his girlfriend a rabbit that died the next day.

Lump of irony award winner: The boyfriend who gave his girlfriend a puppy. The puppy required so much time and attention that the girl didn't have any time left over for the boyfriend.

Gift to avoid #8: Re-gifting is never a good idea, especially if it's a gift from a past relationship.

Gift to avoid #9: Forget cliches, such as boxes of chocolates or flowers. They show little thought or effort.

Gift to avoid #10: Avoid gifts that may suggest that your significant other needs to change something about himself/herself, such as exercise clothes or gym equipment, which may say that he/she doesn't look good enough as he/she is.

A guy I was at school with bought his girlfriend a ring for her birthday. A week or so before her birthday he went out, got blind drunk and came round the following day to discover he was engaged! Fearing reprisals from her notoriously violent brothers, he skipped town rather than face the music. That was 11 years ago and nobody I know has seen or heard from him since.

Choose your gifts wisely!

This one really does depend on the individual. I love receiving appliances and gadgets for the kitchen. But I suppose it is a good rule in general.

I know it's this year's catch-word but if I hear "re-gifting" one more time I'll implode, and it will be messy! :P

I was married once. A long time ago. Ten years or so. Anyway, I never get cold. I have a lot of insulation. My husband at the time bought me an electric blanket for Christmas.

He said, "Look honey! It has dual controls! You can leave your side off while I have my side on!"

8O

Needless to say, we didn't stay married long. :P

Most of the items on the list seemed to be, What not to get someone on your FIRST Christmas together.

I don't see anything wrong with purchacing jewlery (if you can afford it)for someone youve been with for years. I think a sign of comitment would be appriciated at that point.

I avoid buying clothing, unless its pajamas--unless she tells you exactly what the size, brand, color and style she wants...then at that point it's not much of a surprise.

I don't buy (her) lingere either...its seems wrong...like its a gift for ME rather than her.

Me and Lis dont make a big deal out of Christmas for eachother anymore anyways. Its more about the kids..if we have money left over, well buy eaother a few small things. Although, this year, shes been handling all the finances, and I dont have ANY money to spend, and have not boughten her anything yet, while Ive come to find out that she spent about a hundred dollars on me.
So..uh..does anybody need their driveways shovelled or anything? I'm a good worker!!

Nice sig, drew. Jay strikes again!

I'm glad I'm not slave to this obssessive gift-shopping aspect of Christmas. I think this list is just another indication of how spoiled our consumer culture is, that we have the luxury of whining about not getting the "perfect" present.

My mum has a great tip for pressies - never ever give anything that's needed. Presents should be all about desire, or play.

Yes, but see.
Like Prebe said.
I enjoy cooking
and desire kitchen gadgets and appliances...
