From SRD site today, news section:
"The Runes of the Earth" and "Fatal Revenant": US trade paperbacks

Ace has picked a publication date for the trade paperback of "Fatal Revenant": August 2008. In addition, under pressure from the sales force, Ace has decided to repackage "The Runes of the Earth" so that it will look like it belongs with "Fatal Revenant". John Jude Palencar has just agreed to do the cover art. The new-look "Runes" (still as a trade paperback) will go on sale with "Fatal Revenant" in August 2008.
Yay!

Cool. This will give Palencar a chance to redeem himself.

There was an earlier trade paperback release, with the Whelan cover. Did you see that one?

Trade paperback though: so it's the one that's the same size as the hardback only with a soft cover. So they're still not doing the other paperbacks (the smaller ones) yet.

I still don't understand why publishers won't bother to print the books in "regular" size paperbacks. They're avoiding that format like...well, like it's leprosy.

I totally suck. I admit it. I am a loser. Perhaps Jay should smack me with the ban stick until I become a better fan.

I'm not exactly sure why myself. TPBs are more costly to make (duh. they cost more), and I thought the return policy (tear the cover off and throw them out) for PBs made them a pretty safe sell.

But if I had to guess, I'd say that PBs usually have a larger run and are therefor a larger commitment. Perhaps there's a reason for that other than the 'churning 'em out' aspect like print setup or something.

I had a conversation about this a while ago. Apparently trade paperbacks are "easier" to do because the publishers don't have to do any reformatting or anything like that (because it's the same as the hardback). The other paperbacks (smaller ones) require a whole lot of work before they can be printed. And work = time and money.

Hmmm...so which format do you think uses more trees? Trade paperbacks or regular paperbacks? One is bigger but fewer are made, while the other one is far smaller but more (presumably) are made.

All I know is that the invention of paper probably horrifies the Forestals. Those humans and their bad ideas...

Spoiler
Is there a character in Runes that pops in for ten seconds, then we never see him or her again? If so, that'll be the guy in front of the tree. Then he'll depict that character incorrectly.

From this evidence, I predict it'll be Bornin the Haruchai, in front of a tree, holding a sword and wearing a flowing samite robe.
Edit: didn't notice which forum this was in, so I spoilerized.

So what would you all *like* to see on the cover?

(and can we discuss this here w/out spoilers?)
