It looks like one of the greatest monster movies ever. IF it's done right. Right now, it looks like Abrams isn't going to screw it up.

I like the design. It reminds me a lot of the creature from The Host - which Cloverfield is clearly a remake of.

I think I saw this preview during Transformers (which was better than movie itself). Had no idea it's a monster movie, but now that I see what the monster might look like, I'm very excited. It's very Cthulu.

Reminds me of Sin from FFX. (Which is unsurprising, since both are based on whales...)

Ah, I see the Sin resemblance now, Murrin. I wonder if the explosion was from its landing? Or maybe it comes from the sea? Looking at Wikipedia, it says that Cloverfield might indeed have a Lovecraft/Cthulu-based plot.

Considering the last "Giant Monster" movie we've seen I'm looking forward to replacing the American Godzilla with an experience that is both entertaining and worthy of praise. Cloverfield, so far, seems like it might just be what I've been looking for. Sure I was a Godzilla fan when I was a kid. Loved the movies, loved the character. And of course when I got older I saw more and more of the flaws but by then Godzilla films took on a nostalgic role.

Then came the American Godzilla and though I was very excited that big "G" was finally getting the big budget treatment, I was horrified by the resulting film. Yeah the special effects were pretty good but the story was terrible. The characters were thin, almost useless. It would have helped a little if that film hadn't been named Godzilla. I would have been less critical. Cloverfield seems like it could deliver the Giant Monster concept without failing because of some pre conception. This could work out.

Boy, Godzilla sure put on the pounds between the first and second pics.....

Saw this today. Because of the camcorder perspective, a few of the scenes lose their believability (put the camera down and run!), but on the whole, I was riveted. Certainly unlike any monster movie I've seen.

Just for those concerned about the monster drawing posted earlier, don't worry. You weren't spoiled.

malik and i saw it today, and i loved it. very intense! i didn't like the shakiness of the camera; that kind of motion makes me feel icky, but it had to be that way and it was worth it.

I'm going to see it next weekend.

Good action flick, great fx, but poor dialog lots of times. I guess the camera guy was suppose to be the comic relief, but many of his lines were rather lame and took away from the action of the moment. That said, a very meaningful ending for me: always remember those good days.

Also, saw the cool trailer for Iron Man!

Sorry about hijacking the thread, but I had to respond.

A review in the Globe & Mail gave it 3 stars; said that the film was basically a cross between Blair Witch Project (shaky video cam) and Godzilla (monster movie). I might check it out.

I pretty much agree with your opinion on the big budget Godzilla. I actually caught it on TV, so I didn't experience the pain of having paid to see it. I thought the film was not that bad; but yes, the characters were dull, and a lot of the situations were dull. Compare that to Independence Day, the previous movie from the same filmmakers. ID4 was a big budget extravaganza that worked, in no small part because - gasp! - the characters were interesting and so were the situations they found themselves in.

The American Godzilla (just like the original US remake of Godzilla) was truly woeful. They completely missed the point of a Godzilla film and instead, produced a turd on celluloid.

Then again, no Godzilla film has ever equalled the first one.

Has anyone who's seen Cloverfield thus far seen The Host?
