Knowing how much I love a good western you may be shocked to learn I've never watched Lonesome Dove (even though I once rented a room for 3 months in the Art Director's house). However I'm looking foward to seeing the three part mini-series of it's "sequel" or final chapter,
Comanche Moon that begins Jan. 13th on CBS and features New Mexico residents Val Kilmer and Wes Studi. It also stars Steve Zahn as Duvall's character Gus McCrae, Rachel Griffiths-and was mostly shot in New Mexico.

You've never seen LD? Danlo, that's a must see western! The sequels don't compare. Return to Lonesome Dove with Jon Voight was a sacriledge and Streets of Laredo was a pale shadow of what might have been if they could have gotten Tommy Lee Jones and Diane Lane to come back. The prequel Dead Man's Walk is actually really good though. I'm looking forward to Comanche Moon also.

Kilmer's character is so wild! He gets captured and tortured by a Mexican bandit, and the Rangers have to rescue him...tomorrow night, I'm psyched!!

You really should make an effort to see LD. Not only is it an outstanding western, it is, IMO, the best mini-series ever. It took an outstanding book and truly brought it to life. Tommy Lee Jones, Robert Duvall, Anjelica Huston, Danny Glover, Diane Lane, hell, even Ricky Schroeder! The casting was absolutely brilliant.

Well I've, so far, seen bits and pieces (and landscape shots that I'm intimately familiar with

). I think we're going to sit down tomorrow and watch it. I set the DVR to record the 1st episode and forgot to get the rest. Fortunately it figured it the signal and recorded all three. I swear that damm machine is smarter than I am?

Thirded. IMO it's Duvall's best work (he won an Emmy) and it was my introduction to Jones - Call is my favorite character. I've been a big fan of Robert Urick since "Spencer, for hire" was on the tube and he's excellent as Jake Spoon. And, the gorgeous Diane Lane is her radiant best.
The mini-series is as good as the book (a rarity, I know.)

Steve Zahn has Duvall's Gus McCrae down cold. He deserves an Emmy nomination for this role (he's been snubbed by Oscar twice, most recently for his role as an emaciated POW in Rescue Dawn.)
