Inspired by Lord Foul's beautiful "Zen", I was moved to reprint this:

The Crack Between Clouds/Elements in Unison (1983)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What waxes and wanes
in the crack between clouds?
a glowing baby
laughing out loud

A beacon in this continental drift
judging us without a sound
illuminating their sides, underneath
all around

- - - - - - - -

The oval moon
rang yellow-white
in the the crack between clouds
and that
was the warmth I'd been looking for

When the elements move in unison
I feel you miles away
something about breathing
something about discipline

I can drop things that worry me
devilish images only startle and amuse
where there is no fear
sometimes romantic fantasies just take up time
sometimes romantics take time for granted

There is no fear
only motion
forging through perpetual change

Golden angels arrive at dawn
I leave
Golden angels bathe my path
I perservere
Golden angels far away
I achieve

a balance
in a world of personal extremities

You can't rely on one thing alone
reinforcements are required

I believe something happened between you two
I hope someday it happens to me too
I look to me to set some things in motion
to motive my motion
to cleanse this clutter in my soul

To achieve
my gains:
reinforcements are required

to bask in the sunlight
to watch the moon at night

I do not walk alone
walking alone

CAN HUMANS BE AS MECURIAL AS THEY REALLY SEEM!?!
WHAT Should I fight for?
crazy, crazy dreams...

I must SLASH the canvas
of this paranoid picture!!!!!!!!!

And remember that
there is no fear
only motion
flowing with the elements
forging through perpetual change

I wish I could write poems like that, but mine always wind up going back to the style I've always shown here on the Watch. *Grumbles* Well, that's what I get, I guess. My style slaps me in my face and brings me right back to where I was--at square one!

And I noticed a lot of your poems were from the 80s, danlo. That one there is older than me! Have you written any new ones recently? I know I'd love to see 'em.

Excellent stuff, danlo!!

Foul, Bach and Mozart both worked within established styles. Neither broke out and invented new styles. But they took those styles to their pinnacle. (Forcing others, since there wasn't anything left to do in the old, to invent new forms.)

Thanks! In the immortal words of the poet Charles Burkowski (of whom the movie Barfly is loosely based on) "I've seen some stuff on style, then I threw it all out the window. I write whatever pops out of my head and could give a frick (ed) about style."

I've re-edited some old stuff and put it up at the Hangar. I'd really like to write some new poems, but I'm, usually, only inspired to write when I'm single and fighting for my survival. If "the poet's word is the voice of God" then, it seems, he (she/it) chooses not to chat with me when I'm married, fat and sassy! :D

But you never know, turbulent events in world history have inspired such greats as Poe, Eliot, Pound & Ginsberg. So anything's possible...

In the immortal words of danlo, "Everything I write is garbage, therefore only rats are educated." :D

So, marriage mutes the muse . . . Ah, no! *hides from the public forever* I'll make Emily Dickinson look like a Lord Byron!

OH wow..that was awesome Danlo!! I love to write too, but I'm very shy about showing my stuff to people. That was fantastic...and Foul...your Zen was awesome too!! You should both try to get them published!!!

Amen, brutha. Amen. I think Dorothy Parker said it best, "Writing's easy. All you have to do is open a vein and bleed all over the page." I think there's something another poet said, might have been Frost, but I doubt it... something along the lines of [in the heart of every poet is a hole screaming to be filled].

I'm no longer depressed or lovesick enough to write at a whim, and I'm too lazy to develop the habit.

Oh, and good poem, danlo.
