When it comes to classical music, which composers and which pieces do you find to be the best? I've decided to expand my horizons insofar as music is concerned and have always had a certain affinity towards classical music but have never actually gone out and bought anything and I would like to buy the really good stuff first

Depends on what you enjoy. Classical music is a broad catagory. Let me suggest trying a Beethoven symphony. I got started by listening to his seventh symphony. The sixth also is a good starter.
Look for the Naxos label. They have good performances at reasonable prices.
Let me think about this today and I'll give you a few suggestions. Fist should also be able to help you.

[Listening to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony]
Alex: Oh bliss! Bliss and heaven! Oh, it was gorgeousness and gorgeousity made flesh. It was like a bird of rarest-spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now. As I slooshied, I knew such lovely pictures!
Adagio In G Minor
and
Moonlight Sonata (Adagio sostenuto, 1st movement) are by far my two favorite pieces in all of classical music.
