Altered by the radiation of an alien genebomb detonated in Earth's orbit, Joseph Martin's otherwise mundane life was irreversibly changed.
With no intent on using his new found abilities for crime, Martin was assaulted by three hoodlums which left him with severe head injures. His injures caused mental damage and Martin lost his grip on reality claming he was an old movie hero called the Atomic Skull.

Severe head injuries? Boy, talk about understating the obvious.....wait, are we talking about the Atomic Skull, or you?

Wait. How does he speak without lips?

Actually, in that one panel, he's speaking through his left armpit. It's his super power!

Speaking through an arm-pit is admirable, but seems limited in use, especially when up against Superman or Batman.

I would think the atomic powers would be.... rad.

There's an old saying-"Don't count your chickens."
Ah Superman, what a snappy comeback.
Superman is super in so many ways he's just not super funny.

I think Superman was genuinely worried that the Atomic Skull hadn't heard that old saying. I wonder if Supes told the Rad Skull the one about revenge being a dish best served cold.

It's a bit strange. In the first picture it looks as if Superman is fighting Ghost Rider. Hmm.....

Foreign correspondent Mark Todd, assigned by his newspaper to cover the Second Sino-Japanese War, is forced to take refuge in a cave during an artillery bombardment by the Japanese. There he meets the Skull Men, a strange race with burning skulls for heads. They inform him he has been chosen by the forces of destiny to be the champion of freedom, and they begin his training, which grants him abilities such as invulnerability to fire. Once his training is completed, he returns home and, motivated by the horrors of Nazism, dons a uniform with a flaming mask (in honor of the Skull Men), taking the name "The Blazing Skull". (As time passes and he continues to master the Skull Men's teachings, he gains the ability to turn his flesh invisible, mimicking his teachers' appearance, and stops using the mask.)

Soon afterwards, Todd comes into contact with the WWII superhero team, the Invaders, and aids them against a team of Axis superhumans, saving the life of Namor the Sub-Mariner. He also fights alongside the team during a massed Allied superhuman airdrop into a Nazi stronghold.

As the war in Europe comes to a close, the Blazing Skull teams up with Union Jack and the Destroyer to break up an enemy spy-ring in England.

The Blazing Skull later appears in modern times as a captive of Middle Eastern terrorists, having not aged in the decades since the war due to his healing factor.[2] He is freed by the U.S. Agent, who recruits him into a new, present-day version of the Invaders.[3] He has related that between the war and the present he has fought as a superhero at different times in different places, even using different names, such as the Smoking Head during the 1960s.

The Joseph Martin version of the Atomic Skull appears in Justice League Unlimited voiced by Lex Lang. He first appears in "The Cat and the Canary" as Wildcat's main opponent at Roulette's Meta-Brawl until Green Arrow and Black Canary interrupted the match. In "I Am Legion," Atomic Skull later returns as a member of Gorilla Grodd's Secret Society.

In the episodes "Alive" and "Destroyer," he sides with Luthor during the mutiny during the two-part series finale. He is found among the survivors of Darkseid's attack. He and Luthor insist that the surviving villains help the heroes during the defense of Earth against the forces of Apokolips. He fights alongside Hawkgirl and Commander Steel in Washington DC. He is last seen taking advantage of the "five-minute head start" the Justice League grants the surviving villains at the end of the final episode (notably he is the one who vocally opposes being arrested after helping save the world from Darkseid's forces).

Atomic Skull appears in the Young Justice episode "Revelation." He is seen as a member of the Injustice League.
