FIRE!! *we are ok though*

I have to share.

We had a fire at my house. And at least 4 different fire companies - 6 trucks and search and resuce responded.

No one is injured and property damage is limited - I have submitted a claim.

Around 3:00am my wife went into the bathroom and noticed a fire on the floor near the toilet. She doused it with water which caused flames to shoot up! She woke me and I tamped the fire out with a towel. We noticed that the fire seemed to have started in a ceiling fan.

So, I called 911 just to be safe and told them the fire was out but I wanted to be sure all was ok. I then got a ladder and looked up into the attick. I found flames.

Apparently the fire had traveled from the fan across cardboard used to hold insulation in to the wall / eves on the left side of the house. We got our fire extinguisher after searching around (note to self: make sure we have extinguishers on EVERY floor and that everyone knows where they are). I put the flames out but embers still smoldered.

I ordered everyone out of the house (my daughter and my grandaughter were here!) and we brought the dogs into the backyard.

At that time the fire trucks arrived. They spent about an hour here. Knocked a hole in the side of the house to ensure that everything was put out and removed some of the insulation.

We were very lucky. Had I assumed the fire was out (there were no visible signs after the bathroom fire was extingushed) we probably would have lost the roof if not the house. Usually I am not so practical! Especially at 3am!!

My daughter thinks that many of the firefighters were 'cute' - LOL. There were a number of young handsome firefighters (most male, but a couple of women) that delighted my 20yr old. In fact - when my daughter looked up in the attick to see the 'damage' we noticed a flashlight that was on left by one of the company! (damn thing ran hot! I was glad I found it - burried under some remaining insulation)

I called my insurance company - claim submitted - we will need to get an electrician in to check the wiring in that side of the house!

Well, time for me to see if I can get some sleep before I go to work!

In the course of my work, I have the.....pleasure....of walking through homes that are destroyed by fire. Fire scares me in a way that only zombies can match.

Glad to hear that your family's OK and that there wasn't much damage.

My wife has just started to work in insurance - and this kind of thing happens more often than we would all like to think about.

Good actions on your part, man!

And like the others here, very glad to hear you all are well, and that property damage was limited.

Good for you for checking.
I doubt I would have.
Your modesty might be keeping you from saying so but you probably saved your whole family's lives.
