Favorite King short stories

Post by Mortice Root »

I love a lot of King's stuff, but sometimes I think his short stories are some of his best. The short story format allows him to do what he does best - scare the crap out of you - with minimal mucking around with side tracks like character and background. :D (Ok, I'm joking. He's certainly capable of handling those elements fantasticly as well - Stand, Shining, DT, It etc. are all great, and nothing if not complex). But the short stories allow him to jump in, hit you with a quick impression and scare, then jump out, and sometimes the unexplained nature of the "event" adds to the scare.

So a couple of my favorites:

1408 - (from Everything's Eventual). The voice over the phone is incredibly effective.

Lunch at the Gotham Cafe - (from EE). The crazy maitre d' is perfect.

The Mist - (from Skeleton Crew). This just rocks.

The Jaunt - (from Skeleton Crew). Creepy interstellar travel story.

So anybody else got any favorties?
