Kevin's Watch

Mallick and Korbolo were the two main people behind the slaughter of the Chain of Dogs. I can't really think of specifics, but I believe his name came up a fair amount, he may have made appearances in DG. The two of them took credit for ending the Whirlwind and got into positions of power beside Laseen - and we see in Bonehunters their position and the way that Mallick has infiltrated the Claw with his "silk glove" or whatever it was called.

He was also the "traitor" in Aren, (where the Chain was headed), who basically would have been their shaved knuckle if the Chain's soldiers had made it inside. The Jhistal priest that (Duiker?) finds out about in his ride to rejoin the Chain.

hmmmm. well i guess it's been too long since i read DG.

you see that book was so heartbreakingly brutal to me.
i'm probably overly sensitive but really, it just got me reading
battle after battle...i think Duiker's dispair was just too affecting
or something. also the felisen stuff irked me no end. i can't
count the times i wanted to just smack the snot out of her.
so i haven't re-read it.

but mallick rel's name did seem familiar when i read RotCG, i just
couldn't place him. i knew i should know who he was but i just couldn't
remember.

I really liked how Mael basically freed himself from him too in this book.

I can't remember the specifics, only that it was all the culmination of Mallick Rel and his Silk Glove working to replace the Claw.

Okay, flicked through looking, in the Epilogue Hood was not witnessing a death - Dessembrae was. You got your conversation threads mixed. It was the PoV character who was second in command to one of the well known Old Guard, who looked after the princess character while she was hiding with them. He had taken over command of the field during the battle but was attacked by one of the assassins just like the rest of them.

Ah, found it: Urko's chief of staff, Ullen.


Edit: Laseen's death - Cowl shows up, incapacitates Possum, fights Laseen, then Topper arrives and fights Cowl, and finally the half-demon girl who had done some odd jobs for Mallick Rel but seemed to have her own agenda too was the one who finally killed her. We never found out who the girl was.

I just finished the book. I wish I had read the Esslemont books in the story order; I've read 9 of the Erikson books and I wasn't able to successfully change gears back to understand completely where RoCG fits in the book order. Plus, even though this one flowed better than Night of Knives, I still get the feeling Esslemont's not as comfortable with dialogue as is Erikson.

Didn't pay much attention on my re-read, since I was rushed, but Iron Bars fighting the Segulah was awesome.

No kidding. Altho he gets a lot better in "Stonewielder" -- to the point where I began to wonder whether Erikson wasn't ghostwriting the book, or at least helping him a lot. But I don't want to imply that that's my final analysis. People certainly can learn to write better. And Esslemont's learning curve has been more public than most other writers'.

I haven't had any problem with his writing. I'm more interested in the overall story arc. We learn so much about what's happening "behind the scenes" of the Book of the Fallen.

I can't wait to read it again. Once I get back to my Malazan reread. I really like this book!
