The Fresh Aire Music of Manheim Steamroller

Last night, Hyperception finally gave me my Valentines gift. We saw Manheim Steamroller in concert at the Phillips Center here in Gator Town.

I enjoy their music, and the musicianship was awesome, including the local classical musicians they had on stage with them.

But...I guess their music looses something in a less intimate setting. The Phillips Center is a decent hall acoustically, and I totally did not get any harmonics and over tones in the sounds generated. Even though they had a video and slide show running, and some nice lighting effects, I spent most of the show with my eyes closed, trying to get into the music.

The promotion for the show tried to compare them to the tours of Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I've seen TSO twice, both Chr-stmas shows. Before I make a final judgement, I would prefer to see a Manheim Steamroller Chr-stmas show, if they return to Gator Town for one. I am much more familiar with both groups Chr-stmas music. But, as for now, based on the Fresh Aire tour, TSO is better, hands down.

Hyperception also showed me my belated birthday gift, which is a pair of tickets to see Elton John at the O'Connel Center in a few weeks, and our 20th wedding anniversary (which is in a month) gift, three tickets to see Blue Man Group, also at the O'Connel Center. Beorn will be joining us for that one.

Tam and I have Fresh Aire II, VI & 7, Sunday Morning Coffee, Yellowstone, Christmas & The Christmas Angel. I've always liked them a bit more than TSO.

On disc I totally agree.
But...the show was flat. I guess that is how I would describe it, versus listening to them with the sound system set up to personal maximum enjoyment in my home.

TSO's showmanship, light show and effects, and musicianship just outperformed MS in the live arena.

I'll get the program and post the pieces performed later. However, even though it is February, I do remember the encore was Deck the Halls.

It was the only Chr-stmas piece they played. :(

The bad thing about MS vs TSO is that TSO is managed by 3-4 different entities, MS is Chip's thang...
