In Bruges

OK, let me explain. I can only imagine how frustrating it would be for a director, even one that has 'final cut' on a film could get totally frustrated on how 'his' film is marketed. I mean, once it's in the can, it's out of his hands (unless you are George Lucas). And it is generally accepted that the all marketing people have the attitude that THEY are the ones that make people go see a movie, not the movie itself.
So we have the set up for my expectations for seeing "In Bruges" and the final feelings once the final credits rolled.
First: the movie is almost nothing like it is portrayed in the commercials (at least the ones on North American TV - having access to both US and Canadian channels). The commercials portray the movie as a fast pased 'Snatch' kinda movie... an action/comedy with dramatic bits. It's not. This is a drama with action/comedy bits.
Now don't get me wrong, this movie is really quite good. Really (I give it an 8 out of 10), but as I was watching it my subconcious was waiting for the tone and tempo of the movei I saw in the commercial.
I'm not niave ... i know movies are not always like the commercials, but this was really a stretch,,,
I don't wish to give anything away, but the performances are great. Ralph Feinnes is fantastic as mob-boss kinda guy; Brendan Gleeson is terrific as always! And a somewhat surprisingly wide range and convincing performance from Colin Farrel .. he continues to surprise and impress me.
This is the story of two partnering hitmen (Farrel and Gleeson) who are told to hide out in Bruges after a hit gone wrong (a child was accidentally killed), and it's memory plagues Farrel's tortured character.
The dialogue is smart and brusque and you SO want the two main characters to come out on top, despite being very rude hitmen (well, one is).
I recommend this movie. But go with a completely open mind. It's a drama, not an action-comedy.
