Or would that change his dahrma? Can humans elevate our collective consciousness above fear and hate or are we to find ourselves at different places on the contiunum of service to the Land, where one persons service is anothers despare?

Interesting question. Goes to the root of why is Foul such a jerk - is he blinded by a combination of bitterness and delusions of his own superiority, or does his contempt and despite towards the Creator and all his works mirror his own self-contempt.
I'd tend to think that after thousands of years with often little to do but gnaw at the tired old bones of past defeats he must have as much contempt for his own existence as anything else, it's just that his response is to bring everything down to his level.

In some of the Gilden-Fire bits that remain uncut, it is shown that Lord Foul does indeed taste his own despite.
Tastes like chicken.

facinating question .. humans and a collective conscience. I think that as humans - we are capable of overcoming fear and hate .. and not have it consume is. As such we do not have to succumb to despair ,, its arguably not a given
yep I'd say each of the characters could place themselves at different points in the continuum of service to the Land .. Foul I guess wouldnt appear in the continuum as he is not a servant of the land in any form .. but the antithesis of such ..
as we could each possibly place ourselves at different places in a continuum of service to humanity or the planet we live on ..
interesting indeed
