It's an older book (early 80's), and though it suffers from some writing and character development lack of depth, it does a fascinating job of explaining a magic system in very good detail. A very logical approach, and a very quick read. It had two sequels:
Secret of the Sixth Magic
Riddle of the Seven Realms
Each did a good job of extending the depth of the logical approach to magic in his world.
Anyone else read these? What did you think?

I only read the first two. I wish I could say specific things about them, but it was more than twenty years ago, and I just don't remember much. But I do know I liked them a lot!

A friend of mine told me about that series a long time ago. Never got around to getting them but he seemed to really liked it. And I seem to recall him talking about the cool magic system.

I thought Five Magics was wonderfully new and fresh when I read it (when it first came out). Also enjoyed the two sequels.

It was good...up to a point. By some time in the series (can't exactly recall when, it was like 24 years ago) I just remember the detail getting too bogged down, and I started skimming over parts to get the story going again.
There are many books over the years that I have that I have gone back to and re-read, but for the above reason, this is one serires that I never picked back up.
