Hit Me Below the Belt with MUSIC!

I find myself in a rut of music, and FINALLY breaking through to something new. I discovered Vendetta Red, a Seattle band, and it rocks. But now I find myself in a position I've never found myself.

I actually WANT to find some new music. So what's your favorite bands of all time? What bands are the ones that made your eyes open in shock and awe. When you could hear the Guitar Gods screaming down their blessings on you?

Hit me below the belt with music, guys. :D

Are the Pixies new or oldschool? I think I've heard of them.

I can't tell if you're joking, so I'll presume not! They're a late 80's-early 90's band. They reformed about 2 years ago for a one-off moneyspinner tour. You'll know some of the tracks if you give them a listen, especially ones from Doolittle, which is the album you should get after Surfer Rosa. If you haven't heard of them in RL, you've definitely heard of them on here - there are quite a few fans about I've noticed! I'd link you to some youtube tracks but youtube's playing me up at the minute!

Also, if you've seen Fight Club, you'll have heard the Pixies. One of the songs from Surfer Rosa appears during the final scene/credits.

Never was a big fan of the Pixies, but all my friends were, so take of that what you will. I love the Loud Family, who sadly are no longer together, but I'd recommend to all. It is something of a branch off from Game Theory, which might ring a bell or two with some in the know, but not too many knew of Loud Family, sadly.
I just checked their website, and I stand corrected. Looks like Scott Miller, who is the genius of it all, is talking about making music again. So maybe his retirement might be over. He used to answer questions all the time, and I had a few answered by him back when that was virtually unheard of. And looks like he is back to doing it again (the Ask Scott section). His responses often wowed me at his intellect, so...yeah...anyway. Oh good. Maybe I can get all excited about them again.

Eels, always good. Try "Daises of the Galaxy" in particular.

Tom Waits is also a favorite of mine, but I wouldn't put him in "guitar god" category. But he's one of the best lyricists.

For more country-influenced rock, and fantastic lyrics, there is the Rainmakers, who the heart and soul of the band is Bob Walkenhorst.

Here's where to find them. Absolutely hits me where I live.

Checking Vendetta Red on allmusic.com, I see similar artists are :
* The Used
* Thursday
* From Autumn to Ashes
* The Devlins
* Hadacol
* Weezer
* Bayside
* UnAmerican
* The Hives

Well, The Used suck, The Hives are only slightly better, and Weezer is just tolerable.

You could also try last.fm. Download their player, put in a band you like, and see what other bands come up that have stuff you like. I've found a lot of good bands that way (though I've also heard a lot of crap. luckily, there's a skip button).

If you want to give stoner rock a try, pick up Queens of the Stone Age's Rated R and/or Clutch's Elephant Riders. If you like them, I can give you a whole slew of other options from the straight up psychedelic to the brutal and symphonic.

Good music advice, but dunno if it'll hit you below the belt!

Try '1977' By Ash, or their best of, called 'Intergalactic Sonic 7's'

Not giving advice, just a caution, My sister is trying to get me to listen to Goldfrapp

For something *new* I would recommend "Deloused in the Comotorium" by the Mars Volta. Frigging awesome album, and unbelievably fresh.

King Crimson meets Rush meets the Red Hot Chili Peppers at twice the tempo.

Wow! Thanks for the help guys! It feels good to be listening to bands for the first time ever again.
Sunbaneglasses wrote:Balon, what kinds of music do you like?
I will listen to everything EXCEPT pop country and gangsta rap. Old school rap, most R&B, Folk, Blue Grass, etc.. is all acceptable to me.

Just not Pop Country and Gangtsa Rap. :)
