Madagascar II: Um...why?

I just ran across an announcement that said...with enthusiasm...MADAGASCAR II is coming! And I thought...why?
Though I didn't see it at the theater I did see the original film on dvd and I spent the entire film waiting for it to be funny. Sure there was a lot of manic action and quick, quipy dialog by a lot of generally amusing actors but for some reason I found the movie a huge yawn. When I talk to people who did like the first film they usually can't give me a good reason why they liked it except the line..."You didn't like it? It was funny!"
My response is usually something like. "I'm glad it entertained you but there wasn't a funny second in the entire film."
Maybe I'm missing something...I doubt it.

Well the first film made $532mil world wide so that might have something to do with it. And of course Burger King needs more toys.

so any disney film with talking animals will break records? says something about being a product.

Actually it is a Dreamworks production with talking animals. The Shrek films are three of the highest grossing films of all time with lots of talking animals and ogres and gingerbread men etc. Dreamworks do make some toys for tots in the same league as Disney.

if dreamworks does so well - why doesn't dc or marvel hire them? then maybe we would get a catwoman film?

We already have a catwoman film. It's the one where the studio executive, when presented with concerns from fans about the plot and script, famously said, "Shut up and quit complaining; you get to see Halle Barry in a bikini!"

Saddly we could see that anywhere on the internet. It doesn't make lousy movie worth watching at the theater, or buying on dvd, or renting on dvd or being offered to watch it for free on dvd or watching it on cable or...

I didn't mind Madagascar. I wouldn't have made an effort to see it, but my girlfriend at the time was keen. It was just lightweight, harmless silliness.

That's kind of what I'm on about. It reminds me of a comment Krusty the Klown on the Simpsons makes when he's endorsing one of his own products the best he can manage is "I don't mind the taste."
Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Heh, pretty much. Madagascar strikes me as above average for an animated 'family' film more because of what it doesn't do than anything it does do. It doesn't grate; it doesn't make me roll my eyes or gag; it doesn't make me want to leave the room.
As you said, not exactly a ringing endorsement, but better than nothing.

Guys, the penguins were the best thing ever.
If they're back, I'm back.

I thought that too, especially when watching the trailers for the film but when I finally saw the whole thing I'm like "that's it?"
The Penguins (at least as they were clearly intended) were the highlight of the film. No question about it.

I never saw the first one, but was introduced to the penguins at the beginning of Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Wererabbit due to some Christmas short featuring them.
The girlfriend and I sat and watched the penguin short, and listened to the audience piss themselves at anything they did. The girlfriend and I hadn't seen the movie, so maybe didn't understand the characters, but didn't laugh once, and did not understand why everyone had tears rolling down their eyes.
The feature presentation came on, and it was a flip-flop from the short. We were the only ones laughing, and absolutely killing ourselves. The rest of the theater was silent. I still don't understand. Was Wallace naked other than a box that said "May contain nuts" too heady for this crowd? Was it the fact that they had to read make it too over their heads? Or is it that my sense of humor is too dry for 'Merica? I can understand not catching the Harvey joke coupled with "Bright Eyes" playing on the radio (a Watership Down reference) both of which sent me into hysterics, but....geez.

Happy feet is cute.
Not a "classic must have your kids see" movie but it was fun.
There's another one out there with a surfing penguin.
I forget the name but it was good too.

I'd rather shave my sack with a cheese grater than sit through Happy Feet again.

You only wish you had a sack to grate!
