Drop the i

Post by Marv »

I'm thinking of changing the capitalized I and just using i from now on. It requires me to hit an extra button on my key board, which i frequently can't be bothered to do. Why should i? Why is it capitalized anyway? Using i is much less imposing and seems somehow more humble and respectful.

I don't think I could if I wanted to, it would just feel wrong.

well..first of all, stop thinking. Make a decision and do it. I use excessive amounts of the comma and elispes. I like to slow down the reader to a more conversational nature of communication. Thats my excuse and I am sticking to it. ee cummings did his thing,,i can do mine. So can you.

I don't think it really matters. When i is not capitalized, it is not a different word in English, so I don't think anyone will be confused. I don't really want to train myself to type it without the capitalization, but if you feel like typing it in lower-case, I'm not going to stop you or think poorly of you. Now, when I teach English classes, I still require my students to use "I" instead of "i", but I am required by law to teach Standard American English (whatever that is supposed to mean). This web site is not my classroom, and never will be.

i am always me.
i am a lazy typist.
i never capitalize i.
the only time i capitalize i
is when i'm copying lyrics
and pasting them in the
fav lyrics or dedicated or
any other thread.
if i have to amend the lyrics
or correct them in any way
i make the corrections
then i have to go back through
and change all the I's to i's,
unless i'm too lazy at the time.
which i usually am.
i vote forget the shift key.

My problem is the opposite...I've had to fight against a tendancy to capitalise everything.

Any word that is important anyway.

My years of training in English literature forbid me from endorsing the use of lowercase "i" in reference to a person. However, it is still a free world, so I say do whatever makes you happy. :D

The capitalized I probably has something to do with that whole ego-dominated Anglo-Saxon culture thing. I can't think of another language in which the first-person singular pronoun is capitalized, tho I'm sure someone will come up with one as soon as I post this....

At one point, when I was a news person, I used to type all my copy in lowercase. It saved all kinds of keystrokes (and we were using manual typewriters, so saving keystrokes was a big deal). Then I worked at a place where we did everything in uppercase -- just hit "shift lock" and off you go. Of course, you can't do uppercase-only on the Innernetz (hey Luci, I remembered! ) because then you get accused of shouting. Sigh. Rules is hard.

You can write in cursive if I can write in Aurekbesh. Or Tengwar.
