What do you think the bane referred to actually was meant to be?

I voted the Illearth Stone. Tolkien meant the Lord of the Rings to be Sauron, not some kind of veiled commentary on Frodo. Maybe SRD took inspiration from that and, like Tolkien, meant his title to be literally interpreted--not some allusion to Covenant.

While I
really believe it is The Illearth Stone I voted for Drool, just to send Furls Fire into another tizzy!

If it
was Drool the the book should have been titled: Lord Foul's Pain!

I'll only vote for the option:
As SRD loves double meanings and possibilities, both Covenant and the Illearth Stone

Well, that's like what I said before...
If you are asking what was the bane of Foul's existence...then I say Covenant or The Land itself.
If you ask what was the bane Foul
coveted...it's the Illearth Stone.
whyyyyyyyyy do you guys make me repeat myself???

Yeah Furls its true that "Lord Foul's Bane" could mean either something detrimental to Foul, or something Foul owns or enacts that is detrimental to others.
Hence in my options I tried to offer examples from both sides.

Actually, there's so many meanings for the word "bane" that it's difficult to pick one.

I'm with Fist on this one...many possible meanings -- and with an author as good as Donaldson, I'm sure he meant most of them!
