What condiment do *you* put on a hot dog?
At the risk of being beaten by Cail, I'm a ketchup guy.

A good hot dog has to have chili. It can be a bean or meat based chili, but it's gotta have it. My wife makes the absolute best hot dog chili. Mustard is OK, but that's it. No mayo or ketchup at all.

if no chili then just mustard and onion.

Gulden's mustard
chopped, or preferably "bar-be-cued" onion
a tiny smear of pickle relish, not sweet
and tons of heated sauerkraut
Preferably on a Boars Head or Sabrett all beef natural casing dog that's been simmered, not grilled...
(although a grilled carrot for carrot dogs with the same condiments are awesome when I want to go veggie)
...and in a Nature's Own Honey Wheat bun

Chili cheese dogs, when I can get 'em. With onions. Mmmmmbaby!
Otherwise I'm good with yer spicy brown mustard and pickles. Onions if I've got 'em. Sometimes ketchup, too (don't hurt me -- I was raised that way!), but usually not with the spicy mustard.
Best frank-type product I've ever tried is Hebrew National's Polish sausages. (Altho since I've been doing the lowfat thing for several months, I'm not sure I could tolerate them any more.)

Sometimes it's golden mustard, onion, and relish.
Sometimes it's chili, onion, cheese, and golden mustard. (Some people think that it you have chili, you don't need mustard. Noobs.)
Kraut and mustard is good, when you get a chance.
Once, I saw a hot dog in a gutter on the side of the street. It had ketchup on it. I called 911 - I think they took care of it. :cringe:

No doubt. Mustard is the shiznit, arguably the best condiment out there.
Shoot, if I had a sister and found out Mustard was sleeping with her, I wouldn't even be upset.

Yellow mustard and dill relish.
Chili, cheese, and jalapenos.
Onions and a touch of barbeque sauce.
Spicy mustard is for corn dogs.
If it's a good enough dog, and cooked right, you don't need any condiment. Or a bun. Just a fork and an appetite for greatness.
Ketchup is for french fries, and only when there is no Arbys Spicy Three Pepper Sauce. Having said that, my grandmother made an excellent home-made spicy ketchup. It ended up more like Tabasco, but she called it ketchup.

I only ever had chili dogs in school, and the base dog was so...eww...that I have avoided them ever since. But so many of you like them that perhaps the next time I make a batch of chili I'll simmer up some good dogs just to see if I do like how they go together...

If the chili is good, you don't need mustard. Good hot dog chili is made with a good BBQ sauce and has some heat to it - I'm talking crushed red pepper or hotter.

I completely disagree. The mustard isn't to add a hotness that the chili lacks, as you suggest. Rather, it's a melding of multiple flavors of exceptional savoriness. Would you say a hamburger doesn't need a bun if the lettuce is good enough? Noooo. Well, same thing. (Try it!)

This is the reason why I put a touch of mustard in my macaroni and cheese. I can see the reasoning here for the chili dog.
