D&D PC Games

Post by Worm of Despite »

Some of the most exciting, epic campaigns are On CD-Rom!!

I thought this forum wouldn't be complete without a list of the best D&D-based RPGs. Here's my favorites (by no means comprehensive):

Baldur's Gate This one started the whole PC-D&D craze in 1998, spawning lots of copies and one massive sequel.
Baldur's Gate 2 Speaking of massive...a tight story yet non-linear. The characters are among the most well known, next to Drizzt Do'Urden (who could forget Minsk and his Giant Space Hamster, Boo?). Spans 4 CDs and 200 hours of quests.
Planescape: Torment Hands down the best story in a video game, rivaling a novel. Intellectual, philosophical, and based off the insanely unique (and sadly defunct) Planescape campaign setting.

It's important to note that these games differ from pen and paper in that the combat system runs on the fly from D&D rules. So if you take a swing at a creature, the system automatically checks your character's stats, THACO, etc., before calculating if you miss and what damage you deal.

I've never actually played a D&D game on a PC!

Maybe I should do...

They can be fun...what about the Eye of the Beholder series? I'd count those. I'd even count Diablo.

And don't forget NeverWinter Nights and NWN 2.

Many SSI D&D games were made, like the original(!) Pool of Radiance, Hillsfar, Stone Prophet, and the much newer version of PoR that used 3.x rules.

All were fun in their own right...

Oh yeah, Eye of the Beholder was explicitly a D&D game.

...beginning to feel my newbie status even more intently...

I haven't played any PC games.
At least, other than the ones here on the Watch...

Damn, that looks pretty good. None of the machines I have available right now are specced for it though.

Paolo showed me a .jpg of an online game table he uses with friends. Nothing as graphically intense as the link above. But I can see how having a visual of the game could help in some ways.

I guess it's OK to share (let me know otherwise, Paolo). I have no idea of the site or reqs to run it though...

The original version that was on AOL, or the recently released (within the past 10 years) version by BioWare?
