EDIT-Another weird thing. If I look in my sidebar when I post, it says I've been thanked twice. But if I go here it looks like I've never been thanked.

See that 'good post' button next to the 'quote' button in the upper right corner of everybody's posts? If you click it, you're thanking somebody. You won't see it on your own posts; that's so you don't wrench your shoulder patting yourself on the back...
