So the missus and I are planning our ten year anniversary in June, and she wants to go to Australia. I'll have no problem leaving behind the NC summer heat, so... We'll be there for a week. Any suggestions? I already got the OK to meet up with the Australian Watch contingent for a day (though likely while doing some kind of excursion).

Where are you actually planning to go? eg: near Sydney, near Melbourne, near Brisbane?!?

I only know one person who has been there. He absolutely loved it. He recommends all the typical sites but if you can get away from the cities you will see really beautiful land. Good luck, stay safe and take pictures!

Come to New Zealand instead. It's a much better place

From everything I've heard, take more than a week. You'll spend nearly 4 days just flying there and back.

Not to get thrown into the Australasian debate, but from what little I have heard, you will need to choose one, or at the maximum, two areas of Australia for a week visit. In that case, I agree with Vain. My understanding is New Zealand has a much more diverse climate within a more compact area.

...and I can think of three Watchers in the Chr-stchurch area alone. Not to mention Vain up in Auckland, or wherever it is he is...

However, I envy the thought of traveling to either country.

Yeah, I'd think you'd need at least 10 days to visit there. The adjusting to the time difference would take up half of a week, I would guess.

Well, no, it would depend where you went in Australia.


All that said, NZ is beautiful (not that I've been, but I want to go!).


What kind of "experience" are you wanting to have, Syl? Are you more into the city, cultural, all that jazz thing or are you wanting to actually get out of the city and go bush (so to speak)?

Well having been to both Australia and NZ I have to say a week is a pretty short time to get there and fit all that much in.
Perth is lovely and its on the West Coast - chilled out and relaxing.
Sydney is good to visit and from there you can head up the coast to Brisbane for a night or 2 or even down to Melbourne and you have the Blue Mountains not far out of town if you like the nature side of things.
Cairns to Brisbane is very nice to see - lots of Islands to visit and Great Barrier Reef type activities. If I remember correctly most flights go via Sydney in any case.

New Zealand would be my choice but you really could use a few weeks to travel around and take it all in, especially the South Island. Auckland is nice with little Islands near by for day trips and a few other surrounding areas worth a visit.

Would you think of stopping over on your way there or a more direct flight?
