Sorry, guys, haven't read LOTR books in over 30 years, so only remember the movie. It was all Arwen in the movie, reciting the spell at the edge of the river to protect her and Frodo, causing the river to rush downstream in the form of horses. I don't know squat about the books any more. Sounds like I need to go out and buy them so I can refresh. I have the dialogue of all three movies memorized word for word, I have watched them so many times. I'm obsessed, so I can only imagine Peter Jackson's obsession. I think the Fire Lions are similar. Made of lava, shaped like lions.
Heard my ears aright? Did not the gaddhi grant me this glaive?

That's interesting. I remeber when the LOTR movies were first being made, the comic strip Fox Trot had a couple of characters who purportedly were "briefly" cast as Frodo and Sam.

One strip, the director chastized them for "That dialog isn't in the script". The kids respond "I know. It's in the book. We have them memorized".

For what it's worth, I always thought it was just descriptive lava myself...maybe coupled to the earthpower, since they/it answered Berek's call. It was only in a discussion here, lo these many threads ago, that I first heard the possibility that they were more animal-like than just lava.

The best part of SRD's answer, of course, is that he says it could be a RAFO...

Yippee :)

I see the firelions as something between independent living things and just lava. I see them as some sort of spirits of the lava that have the power to direct their constituent material to some degree, so that they can take lion-like shapes and erupt when they will to any direction they wish, but they aren't good at changing directions or traveling uphill, especially after they have started to cool. They also cannot get far from home because their form will solidify into rigid stone, forcing their spirits to relocate to more liquid environs.

But I have a feeling we'll see for ourselves...

Yes, actually you will see this one colored. I am currently working on a Saltheart Foamfollower drawing, but I might scrap it and start over. Before I do I will tackle the Firelion drawing for KW.

I just realized that for me the Firelions were like the invisible creature that attacks the crew in the classic 50's Forbidden Planet movie. Funny how images ingrain themselves.
