My first time

Greetings to you folks at kevins watch ive finally stopped lurking and decided to join this merry band of thomas convenant fans!

Iam in the enviable position to be reading these books for the first time! i completed the first chronicle a few months ago and iam finally beginning my journey through the second!

It is good to be finally among you all, though i feel like ive taken a damm long time too discover these treasured books with the being published for such a long time!

Anyways i have revealed myself to you so that i may askyou a question or two about the second chronicles if you dont mind :)

Okay well am not too far into the wounded land, thomas convenant and linden are in that stone house near kevins watch so try not to reveal too much of what is to come if you can help it.

The question right! what i wanted to know is when foul drags convenant and linden to the land he tells convenant that his soul belongs to him now, and that the wild magic is no longer potent against him, annnnd that convenant will give him the white gold in the end. But what confuses me is if foul did indeed own convenants soul wouldnt he by extension have control of the white magic and be able to just command him to destroy the land and release him? or is he just lieing and is convenants magic still the badass it was in the original chronicles. it would be a sad irony for convenant if he truly was powerless this time round!

I look forward to your answers :)

By the way just have to say i do like the change of tone in the second chronicles, you get the feeling his experiences from his last visits have really strengthened convenant to actually be a driving force to save the land this time. I really miss bannor and mhoram though, and foamfollower of course!

Oah! what more thing ( this post is becoming quite epic for a first post) does anyone know why the audio books of the series are not available to be purchased if your from the uk, because i really want them!!

Thanks again for reading :)

Without revealing too much, Foul doesn't own Covenant's soul in the way you are describing. Rather, by trading his life for Joan's, Covenant has in essence lost the "necessity of freedom" and is now Foul's tool. So, in that sense, Foul own's Covenant's soul.

Be Welcome to the Watch, Ranek skyweir.
Be Well Come and True.

As far as your questions go, I'll cede to the wisdom of others.

Always good to have a new Watcher. Please feel free to continue to share your perspective. I'm sure many of us here sometimes wish we could read the books again with that fresh outlook, even if the books do get better each time you read them (says the guy who's put off his annual re-read for about three years now).

As for the question, I'd pretty much side with rdh. But, it reminds me of the title to Covenant's book, Or Would I Sell My Soul for Guilt (do I have that right?). In this sense, selling your soul is a symbol for loss of innocence, the necessary sacrifice if one is to have power. So, could you say that by owning his soul, Foul has given Covenant power over him?

For reasons that aren't clear to us, the audio versions have been held from UK readers due to some kind of disagreements over contracts. But, according to SRD and Scott Brick (the narrator of the audio books) those problems have been worked out, and UK fans will soon be able to purchase the audio versions.

Without revealing too much (and remember, you have almost 3 books of "too much" to go yet...).

I would say that one must beware of vision and prophecy. While the events they foreshadow *may* indeed transpire, even if they do - the motivations leading up to them, and the actual results of the actions foretold may not be at all what is expected.

Consider Anikin Skywalker - prophesized to "bring the Force into balance". Nobody considered just which way the "balance" of the Force happened to be skewed at the time, and what bringing true balance into that situation would mean.

I empathize but don't worry. Without giving anything away, there are some really great characters to take their place. Greetings and welcome to KW, Ranek Skyweir!

..consider ( as cryptic as i can be) ..in the struggle between black and white,,good and evil,,polar opposites of all kinds...there are infinite shades of gray manifested in the " interface" of the opposites. These shades of gray are parented by the black and white opposites and therefore hold properties of each. At some point,,for a healthy resolution to the conflict between the opposites,,a " rising above" the conflict ,,a creation of a completely new, and unique resolution to a conflict , that is True to the individual's Self..is the only resolution that makes healthy sense. There is the Hope in the utter darkness of the 2nd Chrons...imho. One is owned only so far as one hangs on to, that which owns him.

Welcome and true, Ranek! Some of your curiosity will be answered in the reading... but I do find it interesting that while Foul never really seems to actually lie, he does skew his truth-telling in such a way as to make him look like he's in control, resistance is futile and all that.

Thank you for the warm welcome to thewatch :)

Your input has given me much to chew on as i work my way through the second chronicles. iam relieved at the implication that convenant is not as powerless as foul would have you believe, because i was not relishing the prospect that it was linden who was the one with the power this time round, because my feelings towards the character have been luke warm so far, but maybe thats because i dont have the perspective on her as i do for convenant. With everything thats happened iam really rooting for him to make amends this time!

I do however like sunder, he reminds me somewhat of triock and atiaran..you know...conflicted.

Its a real testament to the skill of the author when he makes you feel really...distraught at the state of the world when you start to learn how bad things are...no stone lore? no wood lore? they dont evan know what the earth power is anymore?!?!?! ..this isnt what mhoram meant when he said he wanted to find a different path to the old lords!

One thing i have been wondering too, with the law of death being still broken (as far as i know) would it be possible for the old characters to be resurected? with wild magic being you know....more powerful than anything!

I know one thing, and ive tried to avoid spoilers as best i can ..BUT the front cover of the book has a big boat on it, a giant boat one could say, i guess there not all dead

And one thing has been bugging me as i read more and more, of course all of convenants friends are dead (may they rest in peace) but where the hell are the ranyhyn?!?

Oah and thanks for the audio book explanation, i look forward to them being available! Will there be an announcemen on kevins watch or will i have to track down scott and keep asking him if i can buy them yet? :)

Geez, let the guy breathe, would you?? It will be interesting to see how someone who is "lukewarm" turns out feeling toward her. Don't spoil the fun by proselytizing so early on. :D

Just RAFO (read and find out), Ranek. And enjoy the ride. I'm about 2-3rds through WGW and am being blown away again.
