The Spirit - Pre-release hype-up thread

I get more and more pumped for this movie every time I see a preview. I know nothing about the comic it is based on, but it just looks so sweet. Plus it has SLJ.

Anyway, this is the official hype thread so that I can build my expectations to the absolute maximum level and then crash after it turns out that the movie sucks.

I agree, this looks fascinating!

Besides--Scarlett Johansen and Evan Mendes. Rowrl.

Looks more like Sin City II than the Spirit. I'm offended.

Wow, a Spirit movie! Can a Megaton Man movie be far behind?

Dunno if that's a bad thing, IMO. Points against?

I'd rather watch a film similar to The Spirit than a derivative of Sin City. Or 300. Or Wanted. The trailer says I'm getting pot-boiled Sin City leftovers, especially how shoddy the color job looks. Oh, it's stylish if everything is black and his tie is red. Wow.

I could be wrong though. But I got this feeling. So keep your hopes way down Jay, and when it fails critically and commercially you can re-situate your hopes on Watchmen. I'm also irked it's directed by Frank Miller. Obviously a director vehicle and not something anyone has high hopes for (at least the studio). "Sure, let him have his fun. He's Frank Miller."

I just thought the trailer looked fun. It "felt" something like a black and white strip, but with a much lighter tone than Sin City.

Yeah, it is going to be a Frank Miller version of The Spirit. How could it not be, since Frank Miller wrote and directed it?

THAT would be worth some hype.

Or perhaps the long awaited Flaming Carrot blockbuster movie event.

The Spirit looks interesting if extremely stylized.
I too know jack about the comic.

The point against would be that it looks like Sin City II.

Personally, I had really high hopes for that movie, from the hype and stylization. Then, when we actually watched it, it was one of the few movies we have ever turned off in the middle.

Stylization does NOT excuse poor writing, acting and directing. Sin City was a waste of good film stock, IMO.

I've never read any of the comics, so no idea what it's about. But the trailers I just watched at imdb.com don't look remotely intriguing. It looks like "Let's make a movie that's as suggestive as possible without making soft porn."

I mentioned Megaton Man because he and the Spirit were the mainstays of Kitchen Sink Comics in the mid-80's.

Not good, folks. Unless you are hyped up by BEB. (Battlefield Earth Bad.)
Jondough Deems Frank Miller’s THE SPIRIT The Worst Movie He’s Ever Seen!!

... And now I’ve seen something that has taken the top prize from “Battlefield Earth.” I mean, I honestly thought that would never happen. ...

... After 2 hours of ruminating, pondering what had just happened, we came up with this description of what the viewing experience was like: “I feel like I just watched a movie in a foreign language, where you speak JUST enough of the language to realize that the main character just said he had sex with your mother and then wrote a movie about it...a movie that you can’t fully understand except for the nagging feeling that that’s your mother up there getting reamed.” ...

... “I think I now know what it feels like to be raped.” (The sense of betrayal, the sense of loss, the sense that somehow it was his fault.) ...

... So, execs over at Lionsgate: F***. You. ...

... I apologize if I got a little (or a lot, even) long-winded and rant-ish. I was inspired by the worst movie I’ve ever seen: “The Spirit”.

Folks, this movie is that bad. I heartily recommend it if you have a strong stomach and an even stronger sense of Bad-Movie-Love. Otherwise, steer clear. [link]

In The Spirit is the following line:

"She got a thing for the bling"

It officially cancels out any value whatsoever the movie holds, as well as most cinematic art.

Well, I still enjoying MST3King a good bad movie. Maybe I'll try to see it with A, since we both love ripping bad movies.

It's a comic movie, so I'll prolly at least get the dvd. Then again, I don't have either Swamp Thing, or the Punisher, Catwoman, Captain America, Supergirl, Elektra, Shadow, or Phantom movies, nor have I watched them. Actually, if they solf the Spirit in a 3 pack with the Shadow and Phantom, or a 4 pack with Dick Tracy added, I'd buy it.

I have the second attempt at the Punisher from 04 and I've watched both Swamp Thing films, Captain America, Supergirl, The Shadow, The Phantom, Dick Tracy, about 12 minutes of Elektra and 2 minutes of Catwoman. I guess I'll at least rent the Spirit first to see if it's worthy of purchase but I have no plans to see it at the theater.

The Shadow features the world's greatest actor, Alec Baldwin, so I wouldn't mind owning that outright and I'm guessing Dick Tracy isn't as bad as I remember so if it were on sale maybe. The rest of those films can stay at the bottom of the 15 for $5 bin.

There's some Spirit clips online here. (Scroll down.) If anyone watches them, let us know. I didn't.
