Which one is better and why...

FR only because we began to get some answers. Runes took a heck of a long time to get going, I thought.

Sure it was.. a little too convenient, but boy wasn't it fun!!!

I liked them both throughly. FR for being what it is and RotE because it was awesome and what would FR be without it?

Fatal Revenant. But that's not because the writing is better (though maybe it is), but because of the events happening. And then the end. God, it's good to have you back, Thomas Covenant!

I think we're in for two amazing books. This story is just getting started.

That's like asking which chapter of one book is better than another chapter in the same book. It's a mistake to judge them "out of context".

Not really...I like LFB a little more than IW, and IW a little more than PTP...is that "out of context"?

I have no problem judging chapters within a book separately, and even less judging two books in a series apart.

Overall I preferred FR. It's much more emotional, the trip to the past was a revelation (ha ha), I liked Linden and MahDoubt's characterisation and it didn't feel as neat as the Staff-of-Law-quest in RotE.

On the other hand I really like the non-Land part at the beginning of RotE. These sectioned of the books always strike me as particularly well written.

There's no contest really - FR is the best book, Sandgorgons (briefly) and Giants - beautiful Giants. I was on holiday just recently and finished FR (i started it when it came out and put it down half read) I cried when the Giants started laughing, (funny but that was the effect it had on me, real tears almost sobbing) the last 200 pages or so are wonderful, I guess as others have said we needed Runes to set up the story - just like we needed Wounded Land.
I can't wait for the rest - I still don't like the time travel bit but it looks like SRD knows what he is doing.

FR for me and I havent finished reading it yet. I was so happy to see the giants again!!
The inclusion of all the different characters made it a better read than Runes for me. Like Endymion, I found Runes really took a long time to get started.
