Is this your first time reading the GAP series?

Yes, I'm one of those unfortunate majority who've read the Chrons and never considered reading the Gap series, not until I found this forum anyway.

I don't know where it picks up, after the halfway mark in book 3 I guess.jacob Raver, sinTempter wrote:Worm, at what point did the story pick up...was it in the 2nd book, or in the 3rd...I'm considering picking up where I left off in the 2nd...just still not quite interested 'nuff...
Just read it, I promise you won't be disappointed. Skip over the Ancilliaries if you have to.

Yes, TRS wasn't as good. And it does take SRD a long time to get where he's going.rdhopeca wrote:Hmm...isn't that what you were told when you were all over TRS? Good point to keep in mind with the Last Chrons.TheWormoftheWorld'sEnd wrote:And it does take SRD a long time to get where he's going.

Tough call. Since you have just finished the second book and apparently have the fourth and fifth volumes waiting, I would suggest checking whether a local library or used bookseller has a copy of ADAHGA for you. Having to wait two months for the next book when you don't have to seems cruel. Keep the urgent pace of the story going!
Of course, those of us who had to wait for SRD to write and the publisher to release each book had to suffer through the same protracted process we are all experiencing with the Last Chrons, but "there is enough time to refine the spirit when the body has no other choice."
The only consideration that might contraindicate getting an expedited copy of ADAHGA is if your wife would consider this to be undercutting her birthday present. You surely do not want to do that! However, if she recognizes that the back order is disrupting the flow of the story, that the library or used copy is a temporary expedient, and that you will treasure and re-read the copy she is buying (but the vendor has backordered) as a permanent part of your collection, you may not have to sleep on the couch...for much longer than it takes to read A Dark and Hungry God Arises. Believe me, your concentration will be divided during that reading anyway!

That sucks. If your library doesn't have it, let me know and I'll mail you my copy (on loan, of course!).rdhopeca wrote:I'm kind of pissed now because my wife got me the GAP cycle for my birthday so I could finally read them...but A Dark and Hungry God Arises is on backorder until June...and I finished Forbidden Knowledge and I am chomping at the bit to keep going!!

Yes, once the narrative momentum starts to build and the perspective widens, you start to see that The Real Story was rather like the fabled blind man's description of a elephant.rdhopeca wrote:I couldn't put it down. Just incredible!
And it only gets deeper and more intense in the next two volumes.
Read on!

I am a speed reader actually, always have been. I go into this nearly transcendental state where I am no longer aware of even turning the page...at least if the book is good.StevieG wrote:That's impressive - you must be a fast reader! Understandable though - SRD claims that this is his best work, and after reading it it's hard to argue with his assertion.rdhopeca wrote:I got my used copy yesterday, and read the whole thing in one sitting...I couldn't put it down. I always try to go back and do a slower re-read to get things I might have missed.

I bought the next book in the series today, some one in the book store had written a note underneath saying. "One of the most underrated sci-fi series he had read and most definetly worth reading"
