What the hell is the grim?

Ive had a bit of a re-flick through about the grim and have realised i still dont fully understand what the heck is going on with this thing.
Is it some part of kevins lore that was undiscovered in the first chrons or just some power of fouls or the ravers being exersised on the disobedient?

I believe it's a manifestation of the Sunbane - since none of the suns were winter, I always pictured it to be a "Sunbane snowstorm," if you will.
