I have shut off, shut down the cable. no more tv. No more hgtv for breakfast, no more sg-1 for dinner, no more frasier for bed. I feel like I'm having withdrawl symptoms. The silence is making me nervous. I know it is better for me, that tv is a time swallower, but I feel like I did when I gave up carbs, nervous.

Good for you!

In the 6 years we've been married, we've had cable for exactly 3 months (we've never gotten good reception on the antenna). I heartily support anyone who makes the effort to turn it off[1]!

Just don't expect to suddenly have a lot of free time... you'll find that there are all kinds of other things just waiting to fill those hours ;)

[1] Yet now that we have Netflix, and can stream shows through the XBox for free[2], we find ourselves wasting time watching entire seasons of shows in order! G**, I can't understand how anyone could watch some of these shows (*cough* Heroes! *cough*) and have to wait a whole week between episodes!)

[2]OK, it's not exactly free, since you have to have a Live Gold account ($50 annually), and a Netflix subscription ($16 monthly).

Heh. I find there's very little on tv that's worth watching anyway. Our house doesn't have an active aerial or a tv licence, and the only time I feel the loss is when we don't sit in the living room together and scoff at bad tv like we did in my old house. But that's not really a loss - instead we sit and talk. If there's something on tv that I really want to see, I get my mum to record it for me.
