Speaking Parts

Okay - here's one for you. From what I remember, this is rather accurate - but please don't beat me up if I missed something in one of my dozen readings...
What character (not a minor one, either) had only a single line of dialog? They traveled quite a bit with the main character(s), did quite a bit, but only ever had one line of speech between quotes "". Two short sentences, between the same pair of quotes, like "Sentence one. Sentence two."
For those who think the answer is obvious:
It's NOT Vain. He spoke five sentences, divided into three lines between quotes "".
If you think you know the answer, make sure you put it between Spoiler tags. Here are some hints...
Hint 1:
He's a he.
Hint 2:
Second Chronicles
Hint 3:
Traveled with Covenant and Linden in two books.
Hint 4:
The One Tree and White Gold Wielder
Hint 5:
A Giant
Hint 6:
Not left behind on Starfare's Gem.
That's as far as I'll narrow it down - it should be more than enough to point out the answer.
But here's the one line the character spoke (which is not as revealing of the character's identity as you'd expect):
"Outdistance a Giant? Not while I live!"

The answer you're looking for is Mistweave.
I'll have to do some research on my own to see if there are any others who fit you criteria.

I don't know how to do the Spoilers, but I agree with dlbpharmd. That person did say that!

I assumed the answer you were looking for was Seadreamer when they were all at the One Tree. I don't remember him speaking elsewhere, but I'm not willing to put money on it.

Dlbpharmd I believe your answer is correct because
he was grateful to LA for saving his life (attack of the Nicor?) and was stubborn about going along since they were short a Haruchai and while they were beginning to travel over the sea of ice some members got ahead and Pitchwife or First chided him on how they would outdistance him if he didn't hurry ... thus the quote...
It is noted that while this is the only line that we may HEAR from Mistweave... he was very conversant as he argued with Honniscrave about going in the background.
Did I win?? Second prize at least?? huh huh?
I need the money you know... gotta pay for those long hours of writing the script... hee hee

Mistweave is definately the the answer I was looking for. I forgot about Seadreamer's one line - but that's a special situation, since he was unable to speak the entire time. Mistweave didn't have that disability - and did say quite a bit, as was pointed out. But his words were only ever once put between quotes.

Last time I read through (about two years ago), I kept an eye out for any other lines and couldn't find any. The time before I noticed that they didn't have many lines of dialog. I have a character in the book I'm working on that is similar - which is probably why it caught my notice. His personality is based on an old roomate of mine who was very soft spoken. But when he did say something, it usually turned everyone's head. So I wanted to have that character do and say a lot, but never put the dialog between quotes. I thought it would be difficult to do without having his dialog seem cumbersome since it would all be done in narrative.

keep the attention draw away and its not so difficult, but to keep it down to one line in quotes, now that is no easy feat...

Yeah I'd thought of Seadreamer too, and also the name Hergrom crosses my mind for a second!

oh yeah... there must b more than one person who only says one line...

I'll have to check Hergrom on my next read through. But that probably won't be for another ten years at this point, so maybe someone else can research that one as they go through those books. But I would be surprised if he only had a couple lines. I believe he gave a full report when Covenant was taken by the Kemper. And add to that THE line he had. (I don't want to say it again and press my luck with the cheese gods.)

And Hergrom says, "Kemper, if you have harmed him you will answer for it with blood."

are you really sure mistweave only said 1 line??
i still cant believe that... as mistweave was a fairly important character...

No, Mistweave is out of the running:
For a moment, Mistweave's muscles knotted with grief. But then slowly his grip loosened, and he lowered her gently to her feet. "Chosen," he said as if he had understood her, "it will be a benison to me if you will tend my arm. The pain is considerable."
I don't remember off hand if there are others.

Doh!!!!!
Oh, well. I'm disappointed that I missed that, but it was a fun thread anyway.
Hats off to the research. (bows deeply) But Mistweave is the one that I was thinkinking of.
