What is the Worm anyway?

Is it like an earthworm? Or is "worm" being used synonymously with "dragon" as is often the case in fantasy literature?

I've always pictured it as a huge black (Dune-ish) Sand Worm somewhat similar to the "Doomsday Machine" from the original Star Trek TV series...

Same here, a big crusty worm that sweats stone when it sleeps.
