Just thought I'd let folks know I saw 3 copies for sale on
EBay today, one softcover and two hardcovers (25 Apr 09).
Softcover is decently priced, hardcovers are a bit pricey.
Personally, I find it indispensible when reading the chronicles. I bought mine the day it first hit the stores.
If you have the coin, grab one, you'll be glad you did.

Found & bought two copies recently on eBay, along with hard cover versions of all the books....eBay rocks!

Managed to pick one up from Amazon a short time ago but have not yet attempted to read the Chronicles with it by my side. I dont know if that is a good idea or not - Could it not take over from your own imagination a bit and restrict you in this way?

I was given one of these YEARs back.. it is now either eaten by rats and bugs or safely in one of my childhood storage boxes up in an attic. im hoping for the latter. Ive got a pern cook book up there too.

Every time i go into a thrift store I see a bunch of hardback and go through hoping im gonna find a Gem in there somewhere like a hardcover version of any of the chrons. no luck so far. I did find a book containing the combo first books of Pern in hardback for 25 cents!!!! i already had it but damn.. cant pass up a duplicate for 25 pennies.. not that i paid with pennies

Speaking as someone who has had a copy for years, I agree with Sharguild that it's indispensable. But then, I'm generally thrilled by anything that promotes the Chronicles. The fact that the Atlas was also a quality publication was a bonus. I did not feel it restricted my imagination. In fact , it helped open it up, because I don't have a mind that easily grasps geographic descriptions. Whenever SRD went into such details, I could at best summon only a murky picture of what he was describing. So to see the Land's formations in the Atlas cleared up a lot for me.

I think the only thing that might put off a reader is the bare-bones nature of the illustrations. Those looking for sumptuous, full color paintings of the Land will be disappointed by the Atlas. It needs to be understood that Karen Wynn Fonstad's goal was nothing more - but nothing less - than the most technically accurate cartographic drawings she could produce, with the cooperation of Donaldson. That gives the Atlas the ultimate stamp of authority, in my view.

That said, it's also obviously up to other artists skilled in other areas to help bring the Land to life in living color, as they say.

eBay rocks...I now possess two copies of each of the original books , all in hardcover....and yes, they look good on the bookshelves !! .....including "Gilden-Fire"...

I found all of the original (I'm pretty sure) copies of the first and second chronicles (except for White Gold Wielder: I found a huge hardcover of that, but I didn't have the money on me at the time: they were asking 20 bucks) in good-condition softcover.

I'd LOVE an atlas of the Land, though.
