After 17 positive reviews I'm beginning to think J.J. Abrams Star Trek might just have a chance to be what we were all hoping for.

I look forward to sampling it sometime after next weekend.

Yea, I'm looking forward to it, probably watch it next weekend, or the following one (comes out on May 8, here in the states, right?). I won some free movie tickets in a raffle, so hopefully it'll be playing at the right theaters?

I havn't been to the cinema since the fellowship of the ring! I'm so hooked on dvd's these days [and those audio commentaries] it should be worth seeing before the dvd release.

I'll wait till it gets about 100 reviews. Some of the trailers and clips made me think it would be "Action Trek", much like Quantum of Solace was Bond turned Rambo. Star Trek definitely needs a new shot of blood, though, and I hope this movie reboots it much in the vein of Casino Royale or Batman Begins.

I'm afraid of the same thing. Star Trek, to me, has always been more about the exploration of humanity rather than just some action flick... and this looks pretty actiony. I mean, it makes sense that people would like that. They like Star Wars, right?

But... Karl Urban is my boyfriend so I need to watch it to support him. (And I'm very excited about it!)

I think we could use another really fun Star Trek. We tend to remember City on the Edge of forever more than Trouble with Tribbles, but they represent two sides of what star trek is. We haven't really captured the fun since IV really. (UNDERRATED!). Lets let the next trek be brainy. I think there is an unbelievably strong cast. (Simon Pegg as Scotty! Perfect!!!) Abrams is laying a strong foundation for a Star Trek renaissance, and it's badly needed. The series hasn't really had it's legs since 1st contact.

The clip that ran during Lost last week sucked. I hope the rest of the movie isn't like that. It was basically a copy from a scene in Phantom Menace, where one monster is chasing the good guys, only to be eaten by a bigger monster. Weak.

Trekkies Bash New Star Trek Film As 'Fun, Watchable'

Looking forward to it big time. Also, I just bought the Blueray Trek - TOS season 1. Watched City on Edge of Forever ... first time in ages... it really is a classic Shakespearian-like tragedy tale for the ages.

Saw a nice interview with Bruce Greenwood on CBC's The Hour. He's a laid back, charming guy. He related how he saw Shatner at a promo thing for the new movie, and told Shatner they had met before when Greenwood auditioned for him for Tek Wars. Shatner didn't remember, and asked Greenwood if he had gotten the job. He hadn't, to which Shatner replied: "Then you must not have been very good." It's just ol' Bill in his dotage. (Did anybody even watch Tek Wars? I didn't.)

I have no idea how big Greenwood's role is in the movie, but he's the only actor in the whole enterprise (heh) that I'm familiar with.

I saw Shatner interviewed a few months back, and he surprised me by being both mildly witty and surprisingly self-deprecating. Somehow I expected him to be pompous.

Oops. After 60 reviews there are 2 opposing opinions dropping the meter to 97%. Still pretty stong.

Oops after 62 reviews there are 3 opposing opinions dropping the tomatometer to 95% (hard to keep up with this as new reviews come pouring in).
In any case I won't be back to check on this thread for a few days so I'm sure it will change one way or another by friday.

I just returned from seeing the movie. There should be a massive disclaimer for my miniature review, so I should state that I not a Star Trek fan and am extremely critical of the franchise. Overall, the movie was very enjoyable, and the new cast (with some exceptions - being the fault with direction and the script) was superb. The new Kirk, Spock and Bones were great. I really did not like Chekov or Scotty, as they seemed to be cast purely for comic relief. Bones started off as intense, and relaxed further into the movie. The villain, Nero was unfortunately one dimensional

I believe that the Romulans did not seem much of a threat -

okay they have a vicious looking vessel and plant a black hole in a planet, but they did not have much character.

The plot was good, but nothing special. I thought there was too much comedy, however given that the writers do that alot in their movies I should have known what to expect.

The science was weak at times (especially

in the supernova story & with the Red Matter

), but I guess I really cannot complain since I love Sunshine despite its scientific errors. However, the purpose of the movie was really to re-boot the setting and show us the new cast, so the scientific problems really 'gets in the way'.

Three and a half stars out of five.

Just got back from the movie and for me its a big thumbs up. I though the effects, casting and plot were good as well as the handing over of the baton from old to new (which seems to be a recurring theme, as long as the old cast stay alive anyway).

Editing I thought a tad weak especially in the early fight sequence which did the same point-of-view/in-the-fight perspective that was rounded on in the latest Bond movie. I'm also unsure if I liked the spectral reflections which again I suppose was there to give a point-of-view feel.

However for me the characters really lived up to what I'd have expected from the crew x number of years before the TV pilot. Waddley, your boyfriend was terrific: I must say Urban is going from strength to strength IMO and Simon Pegg was also convincing as Scotty.

Spock was well....Spock with all the timeless aspects of "spockness" there except........

Chekov and Sulu, both well acted and Eric Bana was a delightful bad guy.

Overall I loved it, the cinematography and computer generated images and scapes were both convincing and novel and the director resisted the temptation to add too many unexplained stray aliens to try to capture the star wars crowd.

Sorry Lore but I'm giving 4 1/2 stars!
