Good Science Fiction Movies

Not Star Wars or Star Trek (though they can be very enjoyable :P ) For example, I would suggest:
1)Forbidden Planet
2)Sunshine

And I'm looking forward to District 9 and Moon. Any other suggestions?

(Note:Star Wars and Star Trek are excluded not because of any weird definition of science fiction I may have, but because everybody knows about them and could hardly be considered suggestions...)

5. Planet of the Apes (original).

War of the Worlds has two recent remakes. Tom Cruise American version, and C. THomas Howell, I believe was a British or Canadian produced remake (and it already has a sequel)

Some of my favorite non-ST/SW sci fi not yet mentioned:

Close Encounters of the Third Kind
AI: Artificial Intelligence
2010
The Matrix
Logan's Run
The Black Hole
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
The Andromeda Strain (the original, not the A&E version)
Dune (1984 version)
A Scanner Darkly

(I've seen thirteen on danlo's list. Only recently watched the Chronicles of Riddick and was surprised at how interesting it was.)

Actually, there are three recent versions. One is so bad it's not worth mentioning, and the C. Thomas Howell one is called "War of the Worlds" not The War of the Worlds, so technically I can list the 50s version and Spielberg's

Oh, I forgot to add Logan's Run to my list!

Is the Mothman Prophecies science fiction? I'd say it's more horror, as it does not really have any scientific basis.

Lots of good ones listed, particularly Screamers, Outland, and 2010. Also check out Silent Running and The Quiet Earth.

Definitely thumbs up for Logan's Run (although the t.v. series based on it was awful) and AI.

Right Mothman (it's listed on 3 so-called Top 100 Sci Fi sites) and Mouth of Madness probably are pure horror-For horror movies I'd have added The Serpent and the Rainbow along with these two. I've naysayed Riddick for a long time, but finally saw about 2/3s two weekends ago and was impressed.

Mothman's a hard one to say... especially since I consider Night of the Living Dead to be science fiction....

Someone else likes this. I don't remember how many times I saw it--time after time--in the theatre (before VHS allowed movie-goers to anticipate owning their favorites). Certainly dated now, but I still watch it from time to time.

Mary Steenburgen ... *sigh*

The director, Nicholas Meyer, went on to make Star Trek II.

Good movie as it has an interesting, non-masculine protagonist. I have always liked McDowell's work. Which reminds me, I must add A Clockwork Orange to my list.
