Atlas of the Land

I just saw a post from a new member about the famous Donaldson Interview. I am probably preaching to the choir, but does everyone know about The Atlas of the Land by Karen Wynn Fonstad? It is a large, hardcover book (200 pages) that is full of maps of the land from all six books. It is huge and a great reference source. Also, it is very cool. Don't know if it is still available, but if it is I highly recommend it.

There is a thread on this subject in the Old Discussion Archives--probably the best, most succint, quote from that thread was made by Hearthcoal...back in Feb:The Atlas of The Land by Karen Wynn Fonstad; a complete guide to the strange and magical land of Stephen R. Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant.
Fonstad also did The Atlas of Middle-Earth (the lands created by Tolkien), The Atlas of Pern, The Atlas of the Dragonlance World and The Forgotten Realms Atlas. She is a cartographer by trade and a fantasy/science fiction fan. Middle earth was her first fantasy atlas.
When I checked today
www.alibris.com had five copies of The Atlas of The Land available ranging in price from $36.95 to $71.95.
The original publisher was New York: Del Rey/Ballantine, 1985. coal:

Had it, sold it on EBAY years ago for about $100. Don't miss it though. It was interesting, but not worth $100. (to me)

Two different versions of an Atlas of the Land are listed on books.com, but none of them are in stock.

Karen Wynn Fonstad also made an atlas of Middle-earth, and probably some other fantsy atlases as well.

I've just ordered a hardback copy thru zshops at Amazon for $14. Got to be worth a look for that amount.
Shipping to the UK cost me $8. I'll let you all know when it arrives, and what I think of it.
The collector in me got it's way!

Although the Atlas is a great reference for covenant fans, IMHO it's the worst of Fonstad's books. I think it was one of the first, and the Land atlas is nowhere as detailed as her later books. Plus, her later books (like the DL atlas) was tri-color, which added some depth.

Just took delivery of the Atlas today, took six weeks to arrive from the US.
I like it, it's authorized by SRD and so gives you a good idea of how he wanted to potray things.
Some great maps of Revelstone and Melenkurion Skyweir to name a couple.
She really goes into detail about how various landforms occurred and puts it all together excellently.
I'd recommend it and it only cost me $14/£9. Worth it I think but not essential. One for the collection for sure and I'm glad I got it.

Fonstad's Atlas is very good. I also am a sucker for adding to my book collection. Igot mine thru SciFi book club.....years ago. It is very good - helps me keep a grip on movement & geography.
I'd recommend to all!!!

Bump...hey everyone, this is the book I scanned the images of Starefare's Gem from. I got it years ago at a Walden's book store in Phx. I think Amazon or B&N might have used copies of it...Ebay too of course.
For all of you who don't have it, I highly recommend it. It's a great addition to the Chrons.
