Google Chrome OS: New PC Operating System Introduced
SUN VALLEY, Idaho — Google Inc. is hoping to gain greater control over how personal computers work by developing a free operating system that will attack Microsoft Corp.'s golden goose _ its long-dominant Windows franchise.

The new operating system will be based on Google's 9-month-old Web browser, Chrome. Google intends to rely on help from the community of open-source programmers to develop the Chrome operating system, which is expected to begin running computers in the second half of 2010.

isn't there already an open source OS? What's different?

I'm guessing the Chrome OS will probably be significantly different from Linux in many respects. With any luck Chrome will be more "new" user friendly and behave out of the box more like Windows. I like Linux and have been using it off and on for years but I've always have a few issues with it.

There are many. I don't see why that means there can't be different ones.

Apparently it's intended more for laptops and mobile devices geared towards the internet than for desktops. I'd guess Tom is right about it probably being easier to use than Linux/Ubuntu.
