It's one small shred of evidence in support of one recent Human ancestor killing one Neandertal.
Who knows? We may have been instumental in the demise of the Neandertals, and if it can somehow be proven conclusively, so be it.
Meanwhile, the Bashing of Humankind as the Bane of All Existence proceeds apace.

I saw something recently that suggested we might have simply interbred with them until there was no more genetic distinction...now if I could only remember where...

I think the interbreeding school of thought has been losing currency of late.
It's likely a combination of factors; interbreeding, interspecies "war," competition for limited resources, global guano-rich housing crisis.
