Ah, canned goods. The main staple of society, and also the one looked down on the most. Can there be such things as excellent canned goods? This Watcher's opinion is that yes, there can be... in fact, there are many canned goods that deserve the adjective 'delicious'. But there are some that should be avoided like expired sardines in mustard sauce. And that is why I've created this thread, so that we can share our horrible experience with certain canned food so that others can learn from our mistakes. But be not mistaken, I'd also like this thread to also reflect some of the great experiences we've had with vacuum preserved vitals.

Anyhows, now on to the horror story of the day: Canned macaroni & cheese. Apparently, Chef Boyardee decided that it was doing sooo well with other forms of canned pastas that it had to give it a shot with macaroni & cheese. And I, disturbed but intrigued by the concept, decided to give it a shot. I mean, Banquet meals makes some fairly good macaroni and cheese, why not the Chef? Upon preparation and attempted consumption, I learned that it was pretty bad (How bad was it?). It was so bad, it almost reminded me of spaghetti in Nicaragua... (Wait, wha-?) It was REALLY bad. (oh...ok) And like bad things, there's waaay too much of it in the can.

So, I don't think anyone here needs to be warned, but I strongly suggest avoiding canned macaroni & cheese...

I try to erase the bad from memory, so I'll post more as I recall them...

The only canned goods I use are Italian tomatoes for soup or sauces (much sweeter and delicate in flavor then what we get in the colder climate of Northern Europe) and some sorts of beans (like kidney beans) because in a lot of cases (not in all) it just as good as dried beans.

This is true, and a lot easier (and quicker) to prepare.

It doesn't seem possible, but Bumblebee Tuna is consistently the best tasting. Also, as far as black beans go, nobody beats Goya.

I have been told the private label solid white albacore tuna from Costco (Kirkland, I think is the brand?) is superior even to Bumblebee, but we don't have a Costco nearby. I've tried Sam's Club Members Mark solid white albacore, and it is very good. I would put it on par with Bumblebee's gold label.

Goya even has a line of low-sodium canned beans now, which are very good.

So CovJr -- is Spam good canned food or bad canned food? You forgot to specify!

Oh my, no!
For Florida, Silverfloss brand sauerkraut is the bomb!
As long as it is purchased in glass jars or plastic bags.
Even better if you can find some authentic sauerkraut in a crock!
But, buy any brand of sauerkraut in a tin and...
...shudder.

...and I can't imagine swimming in freezing seas.

how is it possible to microwave something in a can.... doesnt that defy the laws of microwavity?
