See a selection of f/sf authors in their writing spaces. I notice an abundance of wood/laminate floors, for some reason.

This just kills me!

the one that really caught my eye was Chip Delaney. THAT is a really amazing space. I can't breathe just looking at it.

The pic that struck me was the one of Joe Haldeman: he writes via candlelight! Crazy, dude.

I'm not sure what is it about laminated floors that is killing Fist. He may need medical attention.

Um...but what I found amusing was the fact that, so far, cats outnumber dogs in those pics.

I haven't even looked at the link. I just think the concept is a riot! A connection between s/f authors and wood/laminate floors. Just a high correlation? Or does one actually cause the other?

In the category of Workspaces, this year's Terry Goodkind Award, of which the Dust Jacket Bio Photo is the apex of the evening, went to Joe Haldeman. The prize, a halogen lamp and a pair of industrial strength bifocals, could not be delivered, however, since no carriers ship to cabins in that particular region of the Ozarks.

Piers Anthony was notably distressed at the news, as he felt confident that he had this year's award locked up, shouting, "I've written entire novels about my office!" as security ushered him out into the hall.

I wonder if wood laminate floors can harbor the bacillum that causes leprosy?

Considering he is considered a "local" of Gator Town/Ocala/Wildwood vicinity, perhaps I should check these novels about his office out...

too. (Also I did not know about 75% of the authors shown)

One of the few I did know was John Grant, the man behind my current signature.

I get the connection between sci-fi writers -- well, writers of *any* persuasion, really -- and cats: Cats don't demand that you take them for a walk, just as you're in the middle of writing a major creative scene.

From there, I can extrapolate a need for dog-owning writers to have wood/laminate flooring. Not sure about cat-owning writers, tho. Altho hairballs are certainly easier to clean up off hard flooring than off of carpet. And for the distraction factor, it's more fun to watch a cat slide on a hard surface while chasing a toy. Hmm...

What *I'm* taking away is that the best writing cave includes a comfy couch and a fireplace. And possibly a great view. The stacks of books and the messy desk were a given.

It surprised me how many were office-like. I'm not sure I could write for long in such a sterile environment.

I remember reading about an author (can't remember who it was) who had to write facing a blank wall, to minimize distractions. I bet that's the rationale of that fellow who writes by lantern-light, too.

The folks who work in an office-like environment may do that as another kind of mind game, i.e., "My workspace needs to look like an office so that I'll focus on working."

What surprised me was how many people appear to write while curled up on the couch or stretched out in a recliner. Sorry, I've gotta sit up.

ahh, no, my friend. this is an older one. but I have just ordered a new program and am going to give it a go.

I will be trying to learn it again, inspired by Illume Eltanin

Maybe you need a bean bag or hot air balloon, but I just need a keyboard and something to keep me upright... Though I have written outside on paper, as well as in bed.
