I'm f*cking excited. I loved Silent Hunter III & IV (less so), and I love U-Boats . . .
VIEW AS A CAPTAIN: Walk through highly detailed submarines in the new first-person view and access every part of your U-boat.
• BECOME A REAL LEADER: Interact with your crew, watch them perform their daily jobs and experience the tension and fear inside the U-boat through the new advanced order system.
• WAR STRATEGIES: Choose your own strategy and select your targets with a new objective-driven, dynamic campaign.
• ENEMY REACTIONS: Open new locations, upgrades and resupply possibilities, while the Allied ships adjust dynamically to your approach. Your actions will directly impact the evolution of the campaign.
• NEW USER INTERFACE: Prowl the waters with a brand-new user interface. Now, every beginner can successfully command a sub while remaining free of confusion. In expert mode, experienced players will be provided all the necessary information and controls to command the sub completely on their own.
• CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE: Experience the most realistic and immersive Silent Hunter ever created. Improved environment graphics create a powerful level of immersion as you operate authentic, highly detailed U-boats and fight against surface ships.

Bro, I used to play "Silent Service II" by Microprose back on the Atari, and it was fuckin awesome. In fact i'd still play that game. Thats US subs VS Japanese shipping though. The Silent Hunter series is legit as, and this sounds like the most immersive yet. One thing I loved about Silent Service II was how easy it was to get iced if you didn't know what you were doing. If you tried attacking a destroyer on the surface...for example, or didn't dive deep enough to avoid depth charges.

^Awesome. Graphics look pretty up there, mind you that was never really the selling point of those games. Pure immersion and awesome gameplay. Looks like one for me.
How is the 1st person styles done? Can you talk directly to crewmembers, check individual gauges etc? I would be interested to see the interiors and how much work they put in trying to make them historically accurate.

You walk around the U-boat interior just like walking around in a first-person shooter. The crew can be seen doing what they need or have to do - so, loading torpedoes, resting, controlling dive or trim, tending to the engines, that sort of thing. Yes, you can talk to your crew members, although I have only been able to have conversations (there are conversation trees) with the officers. The interiors are 100% accurate - trust me, I have several books on U-Boats in my library, which include interior maps and images. Everything is accurate - from the placement of bolts to the gauges. Speaking of which, the gauges accurately reflect the status of the ship - every one of them. So, fuel, depth, speed, oxygen level . . .

Sounds excellent. Though I must say after watching youtube previews I want the German language version! Unfortunately my Deutsche isn't up to much at the moment. At least a German voice acted (with subs), German instruments/readouts (Tiefenmesser etc), but English text conversation tree version would be perfect. Fussy, i know. I just really hated the sloppily voice acted approach they used for the Company of Heroes games. Great games, but needed less hammy (American accented??) English when playing Wehrmacht and Panzer Lehr in multiplayer.

A friend is looking for a realistic submarine simulator. He feels that the sub games he's played in the past have been too much like shooters. He comes from a naval family and is interested in an accurate sim. Would you recommend this series to him, Loremaster? If so, which installment in the series would you suggest?

Silent Hunter 3 is a masterpiece, but get him to download the Grey Wolves mod. As for SHV, it's very good but it lacks three very important things: compass, rudder control, and depth under keel meter. However, they are being added with the next patch. Personally, I would go with V because it adds so much. But 3 is less graphically intensive, and more realistic.
